via German (i believe) via English, we borrowed the word "camping" into the Norwegian languagedo not confuse this for sleeping out in a tent, or going on hikes.when you see "campingplass" or "camping" on a road sign in Norway, this is a business that rents plots out to camping trailer / RV users for a few nights.do not confuse it for an actual camping site where you light up a fire and go on hikes. this is targeted toward lower middle class people.typical Scandinavian lower middle class memory is spending the summer in one of these places. and there is nothing to do there. but this is what your parents think a vacation is.

@thor There are RV only parks but they seem rare. Most campsites are open to RVs, trailers, tents and commonly provide hytter.People just don't use tents anymore. I've been to multiple campsites this summer and there was a maximum of one other tent than mine on each site I stayed for the night.

@encarsia yeah, i mean, this is true. but it's not real camping. that happens out in the wild. it's "camping".

@thor According to this definition staying on campsites (campingplass) is no real camping in general. That's quite a Norwegian thing to say...😅

@encarsia it's a very English thing to say. "campsite" as it is ordinarily understood in English does not ordinarily feature any RVs or mowed lawns.

@encarsia the main point of my post is to point out how weird it is that we borrowed "camping" - the English word - only to misuse it

@thor We tamed campsites like we did with the wolves. Now there a RV parks with power stations to charge the battery of movable houses to watch Netflix instead of the stars and no open fire allowed and pugs that can't breathe.

@encarsia Norway resembles America more than the rest of Europe geographically speaking, because we have actual wilderness here, and plenty of it.

@encarsia it seems the main reason we did this is because of "camper trailer" - which native English speakers do know what is - and we went "ah, they mean the RVs and such, so we will have 'camping' sites" :blobcatgoogly:

@encarsia the word we use for actual camping would be "telttur", not the English loanword "camping" that you see so often along roads.

@thor Yes, there is a lack of differentiated vocabulary.Your vision of camping is what we now call wild camping and that's usually not permitted (and often times not possible due to dense settlement structures) outside of Scandinavia (and not even entirely there, but Danmark has its wonderful shelterplass spots).

@encarsia but yes, the rest of Europe is *very* domesticated. civilisation permeates it.

@encarsia if you're car-based, you can semi-camp if you see a sign like this we'd consider this a bit closer to actually camping

@encarsia it probably also doesn't help that wilderness is fairly rare in the more densely populated countries of Europe, so if you try actually camping in most of it, you risk setting up a tent in someone's back yard.

@Viking @encarsia Denmark's tallest peak.i don't think they really care in Denmark. but i'm going to ask questions if a Danish person claims any kind of authority on mountains.
