       Here's why #Mastodon needs a "quoted toot" function. @MastodonEngineering doesn't wanna call it "quote toot"?ok how about what it actual is: COMMENTin linguistics,  COMMENT ≠ REPLYa comment isn't necessarily directed at a subject. a reply is. comments are peripheral communication. replies are direct communications. YOU NEED BOTH --peripheral & direct-- COMMUNICATIONS to be a true social platform. #Mastodon acts as a minimal blog, not quite yet as a social media platform.

       @blogdiva Fingers crossed we won’t have to wait too long for quotes. In the meantime you can find workarounds by using an app that has implemented quote functionality.

       @anderspuck @blogdiva It's on the roadmap, but a small dev team tends to result lengthy periods for updates such as that. On the other hand, firefish has this out of the box.

       @stcwhite @anderspuck why aren't they merging it back into the main code? why do people have to fork the code to get shit done?this is bullshit. if they need more people to get paid, then let's raise money for that. but that isn't an excuse. AT ALL.

       @blogdiva @stcwhite Firefish is not a fork of Mastodon but another service that also uses ActivityPub so they can exchange posts. Mastodon has a Patreon where you can support if you want.

       @anderspuck @stcwhite payment to get this done should be set with a goal; to show good faith in wanting to make it happen. the money for their sustainability should be separate. i'd like to see that not as a charity but as part of a cooperative membership with voting rights in the project.

       @anderspuck @blogdiva Quite right; I should have been clear. I have been hearing very encouraging things about firefish, not least of which was that it addressed a series of lingering concerns that have dogged Mastodon.
