@realcaseyrollins @aaron It all boils down to them having no constitution. So everyo e was pissed off cause they didnt know who shoukd get the final say, their congress or their supreme court.

From what I can gather the government is trying to limit their court’s ability to strike down laws. Israel doesn’t have a formal written constitution so instead of ruling that a law isn’t constitutional, they have been using a standard of “unreasonable”. I’m not enough of an Israeli legal expert to know exactly what that means but this law would stop this practice or at least greatly curtail it. To call it an authoritarian move is probably a bit hyperbolic. Israel has a parliamentary system with tiny parties that have to form coalitions to form a government. No one party ever has enough seats on their own. So the breakdown of the coalition and the subsequent election would act as a check. But that’s just an outsider’s opinion on that so feel free to take it with however much salt as you like.

@midway Yes there are two sides... the courts want to make it so politicians in congress can override the supreme court (which is sorta how it works int he USA).. oetherw want to make sure the supreme court get final say...Both are "authoritative" because no matter what you pick one side gets final say and authority... int he USA we have a consitituion so the final authority comes int he form of amendments to the consitution, which means congress, but it also means with 2/3 support of congress.@realcaseyrollins @aaron

@Akshay I disagrewe with the analysis.. Teh cronies heading up judicial review want absolute final power... the cronies that make up their parliment likewise want absolute power.BOTH solutions are a failure as they wind up with one side having the final say and still no constitution... They should be arguing for a constitution, anything less is just corruption from 2 different ends.@realcaseyrollins @aaron

@freemo @aaron @Akshay Not sure if I agree with this take; if I understand the story of modern day #Israel correctly, it was created using land occupied by Palestinians, that previous belonged to the Jews but was abandoned after they were all rounded up during #WWII. The #UN basically seized the land and gave it back to the Jews once they were freed from #Nazi #Germany.Do I have it right?

If you are talki g about being taken from the jews 2000 years ago, sure... in modern times, no, there was no significant population of jews in israel for a very long time before ww2.To out it in perpsective in the decades leading up to ww2 israel had 10x more palestinians (arabics) than jews.

@realcaseyrollins @aaron @Akshay Palestinians were living there as a peace nomadic people, clean, minimal cities, etc. They had outnumbered the jews in the state for many decades and many there were proud of the many generations they have lived there.Then one day the un came in and told thrm it was someone elses land, someone who hadnt owned the land or been a majority of the populace in thousands of years... then the wars started...
