@gabrielesvelto macOS X11? Fine, but it goes back to 1984, for unix environments https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X_Window_System#The_MIT_X_Consortium_and_the_X_Consortium,_Inc.

@pogo_thepossum that's the icon I had on my machine and I didn't know if it was Apple's design or just reused an existing one

@gabrielesvelto I actually didn't know macOS used the X system! I know the underlying OS was BSD, which is close to unix, but not about the windows manager. I have lots of experience with unix, very little with mac ...

@pogo_thepossum They don't, it's just an X server that works on top of Quartz, a lot like XWayland does. They used to provide it for compatibility reasons, so you can port X11 software easily. I'm not even sure it's included by default nowadays, probably has to be installed separately. @gabrielesvelto

@m0xee @pogo_thepossum it was introduced in 2003 in macOS 10.3 and even back then it wasn't part of the default installation, you had to explicitly ask the OS installer to include it

@gabrielesvelto Yeah, same as "BSD subsystem", but at least it came with the distro, later they've made it downloadable separately from the App Store and at some point considered abandoning that port completely AFAIK. I'm not sure what the current status is, I've given up on Mac OS X (or just OS X, or macOS or whatever they call it now 🤪) some time around 10.11.@pogo_thepossum

@m0xee @gabrielesvelto I see. I am not even sure about the differences between XWayland and Xorg, I am just an end user. As long as those windows work, I am happy!
