Hey this is sort of a weird question, but does anybody know where I can find FULL floorplans of outdated cruise ships, preferably ones from the 60's or 70's? Not just the ones they gave to passengers, but also including crew quarters and engine rooms and such?I specifically need outdated ones because the story is taking place in the 70's.

@kalonZombie I know that there's a "SS Canberra" fan site which has pretty complete diagrammes. There's a "plans and drawings" link here that works.https://web.archive.org/web/20210316223419/http://www.sscanberra.com/

@gemlog @cstanhope @kalonZombie Am I really such a monster, for wanting the US government to sell me the SAVANNAH, so that I can refit her with a modern nuclear ship powerplant (design sketches on request) and live aboard until I finally get free of this planet?

@kalonZombie Also the Steamship Historical Society of America maintains excellent archives, and a research center, although it may not be convenient for you to visit.https://shiphistory.org/

@gemlog @cstanhope @kalonZombie I'm not one of those live-aboard purists who insists on gardening, although I might in fact do some horticultural experiments (directed toward space settlement primarily). The base function of the "Savannah" is to be a showcase of the peaceful uses of atomic energy, and to visit ports and be opened to the public, and that is precisely what I propose to do.

@gemlog @cstanhope @kalonZombie It's government property. There's a history of selling things like that for $1, which would be completely appropriate. The new powerplant? That's probably a $100 M project, although that could be inflated arbitrarily. The engineering isn't first-of-a-kind, but has to be re-created. The shipping lines, shipbuilders, and reactor vendors have strong reasons to get behind the project. They might never initiate it themselves, but it's a chance at buying a future.

@gemlog @cstanhope @kalonZombie Existing nuclear ship powerplants are PWRs. That's just no good. Steam plants are cranky and require a lot of maintenance and personnel. Leave them to big shore power stations.General Electric turned their nuclear-heated jet engine into the "630A Maritime Steam Generator" because gas turbines at sea were still unproven in the 1960s. All that's needed is to turn it back. Water moderator, medium-enriched TRISO fuel, nitrogen coolant in a closed loop.

@gemlog @cstanhope @kalonZombie If we can build nuclear power units at an investment cost of approximately $1 per watt, or $1 billion for a gigawatt station, then assuming an annual load factor of 5000 equivalent full-power hours, and an interest rate of 5%, the contribution of investment cost to the cost of power is 1ยข/kWh.A new powerplant for the "Savannah" would be about 20 000 shaft horsepower, but it would be a prototype for units the size of the largest marine Diesels, say 100 000 shp.
