In the internment camps we learned valuable skills! Like how not to get shot for trying to escape, when we just running to use the public latrine on a freezing cold night.

Yikes, shit had been pretty messed up back then. Not to worry, though for those of us born late we'll eventually have our turn of getting rounded up into concentration camps.

Ey, I've seen your instance pop up on a few occasions in Fediblock notifications. Though I'm probably not as well-versed as someone that has studied history extensively back in school, I do keep a pretty surface-level understanding of most of the stuff that interests me. Seemed like everyone was at it back then, the Japs, Americans, and Germans consigning civilians and POWs alike to internment camps. It was a particularly dark period in recent history that caused immeasurable suffering for everyone all around.

@Maholmire Countries in WW2 did intern "enemy aliens" (citizens of enemy countries), but what is exceptional and disgraceful about the Japanese internment in the US is that it included US citizens. In addition to losing their freedom for years, they also lost their houses, businesses, and farms. And it was obviously racially discriminatory, given that German-American and Italian-American citizens were not interned.(BTW, I'm offended by your use of that derogatory term for Japanese people)

When contrasting Nazi concentration camps with Americana and Japanese internment camps, it really can paint a pretty bleak picture where all parties involved were no better than each other. As for the previous remark you've addressed, I had simply used it as a shorthand no differently than one might call an American a yank or a German a jerry and so on. Given the sensitive nature of the topic at hand, it goes without saying that I meant no offense by it.

Just about sums it up for the most part. A ruling made by a liberal Supreme Judge decades ago can now be overruled by a Republican Supreme Judge. Meaning the very law itself is now subject to the whims of a select few that happen to be presiding over the supreme court at the time. Y'know, the very opposite of setting a precedence by which all other civil and criminal cases are weighed against where relevant.

@Maholmire @eob why are you offering your take on an issue that you openly admit you know nothing about? Why did you feel the need to downplay the actions of the US government, and the experience of OP, by highlighting the atrocities committed by other nations?

@Maholmire Please don't put the Nazi concentration camps and the Japanese internment camps (often slave-labor camps) on the same level as the allied internment campsThe Axis concentration camps and slave-labor camps were scenes of industrialized murder on a mass scale, some of the worst evils of historyThe Allies internment camps, while being discracefully racist and contrary to the democratic ideals is some cases (as for Japanese Americans), were intended only to keep detainees contained

Internment camps regardless of which country ran them are inhumane environments built to contain those that have been dehumanized by their captors. It wasn't uncommon back then in particular for soldiers to treat opposing forces as less than human, subjecting them to appalling working and living conditions. It is for this very reason I personally consider all three to have been bad as each other in this respect. That is to not conflate or trivialize one as being more evil than the other. But I do think we can both agree that nobody in world war two can claim to have been "*the good guys*" when so much immeasurable suffering has been caused by everyone all around.

@Maholmire If ever there was a war where there was *not* a moral equivalence between the two sides that was World War 2.That's not to say the allies were faultless. But for fuck's sake the other side were literal Nazis! If they ahd won the war they would have enslaved the world and committed even worse genocide on an unimaginable scaleIt seems you are either a fascist or are trolling, so I'm blocking you now. That's the end of this conversation

@georgetakei The Ultimate in Irony. This sign is currently in my garage. I inherited it from my father, who grew up in Arcadia. He would have been about 11 or 12 when the “camp” was active. Trees and shrubs were clearly more important to the Army than the Japanese Americans interned there. It’s a reminder to me, every day, of man’s inhumanity to man.

@Maholmire @eob This is a good point to deepen our understanding of history, especially the firsthand accounts of people who were there. We can avoid it happening again if only we take it seriously how fast things can go bad. A couple years back, I saw an art exhibit about the development of German propaganda before WWII and it some of the tactics were horrifyingly familiar to what's happening today
