@timkmak ASAP start taking donations directly via #FedNow. get off Substack, Threads and any other corporate social media with ads and algorithms where somebody else can decide what your followers see or take some of the money people want to give you. run your own blog and remove any paywalls. run your own Mastodon server via masto.host if necessary. be truly independent. explain to whoever will listen why everyone needs to move here if they care about honest news. please.

@wjmaggos substack doesn’t have any ads and I control all my content. We typically don’t use paywalls on our daily coverage. Plus I control the ultimate relationship with our readers

@anderspuck @timkmak I have notifications set for when @timkmak posts, I think @anderspuck has a good point. Maybe combine some of your posts so the threads aren’t so long? And I notice you don’t use hashtags often, tagging them with # Ukraine would get wider reach. Apologies for butting in. I really appreciate your reporting, it’s important to have reliable news on Ukraine here.

A lot of people saying just add some hashtags and engage more! Which, fair. But one thing I want to convey is how exhausted our team is. We spend all day traveling by car or train. We are out in the heat reporting from the field. We work 14-18 hours a day. All of us live in our office in Kyiv. We are doing everything we can to bring better journalism to you folks and every small task takes up time we could be sleeping or reporting or just not working!

@timkmak I think that's a plus as is the control over email addresses. but they are a startup needing profit. if they can't grow forever, which is impossible and we shouldn't want that from a competition standpoint, they will find ways to squeeze readers or writers. nobody should want one company to dominate freelance journalism. for readers or writers to feel like there's one place you go to for that kind of work, as opposed to independent blogs connected by a decentralized network.

Thanks for everyone’s concern! Truth be told I haven’t had a single day off since May! Launching a #startup — from a war zone in #Ukraine ! — has been tough. We have all sorts of things to think about from safety and security to logistics to social media to marketing to legal. This is all before we get to the journalism we need to do! Which requires planning, security, gear, and the toll that travel takes.

The news isn’t free. And you get what you pay for: low quality opinion driven posts on social media for clout; or ad-driven commercial media in big organizations. Or through the subscriber model, where I’m directly accountable to you. We do posting on social media as a service to our followers! But it ultimately will not be sustainable if we don’t get subscribers who sign up to pay. Does that a little more sense?

@timkmak If it hasn't been mentioned already, Mastodon is much more tag-dependent on finding topics or posts.. so if you're writing on Ukraine, putting a #Ukraine tag on at the end or in the post somewhere will help matters.

@stribeprogblog it can take twenty minutes just to copy and paste a long thread into each social media platform. An hour to write the thread. Adding tags would substantially increase our daily effort. And would the juice be worth the squeeze?

@timkmak typing in a #Ukraine tag in your posts takes what, 10 seconds, if that?Edit: If you start typing in the Ukraine tag, you'll see how often it gets used. on my particular mastodon server, it gets used or seen 6K/week, if I take what that means. On other higher used Mastodon servers. it may be higher then that.

@timkmak @stribeprogblog I find it weird that you worry about engagments, but can't even tag a post. Following everyone that posts about #ukraine takes a lot more then following that simple hashtag. Make a doc with all the hastags, then copy paste one more time. 🙂
