My husband went a game developer convention in California this week and his laptop was stolen! Not just his, but several other people who were attending too. The thieves tried to take any electronic that wasn't nailed down (a pre-meditated crime of opportunity). I don't have much hope of the CA police actually catching the thieves and getting our stuff back. If they have any intelligence at all, they have a middle man to hand their goods off to immediately after the theft.

@lynnmedichi that sucks, so sorry to hear that...If I had to go to Cali for any reason, I'd seriously have to watch my back

The convention had insurance & the planners (??) are pretty sure that should cover the thefts. Even if it doesn't, we also have renters insurance, which I think will cover it too. I wish this wasn't his 3k laptop that got stolen 😫😫😫 so expensive to replace & we'll be eating the up front cost no matter what

@Andre my husband is getting a degree in 3d modeling & animation. A lot of the jobs related to this degree are in CA. Having his laptop stolen the first time he visited the place is not encouraging us to want to live there 😅😬

@lynnmedichi For business, you'd want to have insurance to cover it. Modern laptops should have a "Find My" type service available, and render the device not operable, or at least you won't have your data easily stolen.Very annoying nonetheless. You can't even go to the toilet without worrying about it.

@nchia Yeah, I already did what I could to lock down his laptop. For that to work the computer has to be turned on and connected to the internet. If the thieves are a little smart they'll wipe the drives before connecting them to the internet 😅

@lynnmedichi @nchia To lose all your college work is terrible! I lost all my undergrad work and LOT of family pics on my laptop which my mom compromised by opening an email that contained a ransomware virus! So I feel your pain. I'm so sorry this happened to y'all

@MMA @nchia That's exactly what my husband was mourning over... we can replace the laptop but not the work. I think I might buy cloud storage after this, just to make sure he can have all his work backed up on a cloud. :((((

@lynnmedichi @MMA I’m gonna assume any IT pro would not have all their work kept in one location.

@nchia @lynnmedichi Oh but school can get away from you... discussion, research, papers.... mostly what I ended up doing was emailing things to myself because I always forgot to back up my work. I'm definitely not an IT pro by any means, but it was a work around for my scattered pineapple brain.

@lynnmedichi @nchia Hopefully he can log in and grab written stuff from his earlier work to use as templates. And I'll bet reviewing his class discussions will spark the memory of the work he's got pending so he can quickly recreate. This is just a shitty situation, and it totally sucks.

@nchia I'm the IT person in the family. I backup my backups (cloud & physical). But with his school laptop, they have things set up a certain way and I didn't mess with that. (I've been known to break things, lol) I'm actually a little surprised they didn't have cloud backups myself but 🤷‍♀️ His laptop was a high end gaming laptop, so it'll probably get resold for $$$$. I'm 99% sure the HD will get wiped for reselling. Though we did give the S/N to the police so there's that..... @MMA

@lynnmedichi @MMA Might be stuck what options you have if you don’t have full control with the laptop. Incidentally, for those who want cloud backup but don’t trust the companies offering it, a good alternative is setting up your own. It’ll cost a LOT more, but the cloud synching is only one part of the NAS. By a lot more, you’ll need a constant internet connection, a few hundred for the NAS hardware plus drives. I use Synology.

Update: Our renters insurance covered the loss of the laptop. We're now waiting for the report to be completed so my husband can get a new school laptop (school obviously wants proof it was stolen). School informed us that we had to pay for the replacement (duh). Only question now is whether my husband will get the report before his next class starts.
