@ForbiddenDreamer All ik is the higher number of Hz, the better the refresh rate and you'll get more use out of the higher fps. Also OLED is gud. You tend to get higher peak brightness out of them compared to others. Watch out for dimming zones.

@ForbiddenDreamer @justnormalkorean Currently, the 4K 120+Hz OLED monitors available are huge, and there's several 1440p OLED monitors that are 27-32 inch types. There's also MiniLED (which doesn't have burn-in), but HDR is a little worse because of those dimming zones.

@skylar The ryzens are thermally throttled though, and they just push themselves as hard as they can until they hit 95C.The 170W tdp is the base level, but it goes up from there as the clock increases. It looks like there's a bit of a performance hit from going to air, but I'm not sure I'm actually that worried about it. Note that this is from a similar cpu that just has more cores, though I'm going with the 7900x for better single core performance.

@ForbiddenDreamer i wouldn't worry about its performance on air, unless you're going to be doing a ton of long running, CPU intensive taskseven then, it just depends on how many cfm you can push through an air heatsink, which is only really limited by the amount of fan noise you can tolerate at full loadif i were doing liquid i'd get one of those cheap oil/tranny coolers instead of paying "gaming PC" prices for wee little radiators

@skylar I may do a fair bit of transcoding and rendering...And you're not wrong, I find the AIOs to be kind of cringe, though this is mostly a stopgap to keep me from going down the expensive and time consuming rabbithole that is overclocking. The air cooling may still be an option, though I'll have to see what kind of noise the current options have.

@ForbiddenDreamer @skylar 7000s are designed to run at 95c day and night without degrading. Or at least that's what AMD says. Is it throttling? Who knows. Buying any AIO other than the post-revision Liquid Freezer IIs = skill issue. Air coolers can't compete.If you're spending 7900X money you should probably get a 7950X, it's not that much more money and the performance is that much better. It's harder to cool at completely stock settings unless you're a 420mm chad but I'll let you in on a secret: you can enable a 105W ECO mode included in your BIOS and lose ~33°C on average under full load. FOR. FREE. YOU LOSE VIRTUALLY NOTHING. There's a 65W mode that STILL beats out the 7900X.

@ForbiddenDreamer @skylar The 79X03Ds are a pain in the ass, the extra cache is only useful in games and if gaming is all you do then the 7800X3D is the much better choice. There's so much shit that needs to go right to use them (recent Windows build, some specific drivers and shit, balanced power plan, xbox game bar absolutely turned on etc etc) and even then you're relying on the xbox game bar because the windows scheduler has no fucking idea which CCD has the extra cache. They clock a bit lower and you can't officially touch anything. I'm not even sure if they have an ECO mode. You also only use half of them while gaming as all the cores in the CCD with the extra caches get parked.

@WashedOutGundamPilot Some gaming, ai generation, xplane, and motivation to work mad OT & quit smoking.I might be able to get by upgrading a used system, but I don't know anyone selling and you're not really saving anything buying from ebay or whatever. Probably getting a refurb 3090 ti, though everything else will be new.

@ForbiddenDreamer If you got friends I’d start asking them. I’ve never been much of a builder, but I’ve been a clearinghouse for bros and friends who have stuff they wanna upgrade from. I don’t even know what’s good or cutting edge anymore, I’m still using stuff from way back when. I haven’t started up xplane in a while but I’m about to soon on my new rig. I used to run it w/ a quad core xeon and it was acceptable for me having enough detail in the cockpit to train with. This was all taken in the 2016 timeframe, I think. The real fun is pirating the good aircraft models. I could never get the cool ortho mods to work well, just didn’t render how it should and since I was always more into training than scenery I just turned them off. Still haven’t tried MSFS, I tried it once but it wasn’t booting and I only really like flight sim to acquaint myself w/ new planes for free. I really like its flight modeling, tends to be somewhat realistic

@ForbiddenDreamer Also IDK what my grafix card even is, it’s a 590? I think? w/ a ryzen 5? Not sure what that equates to. Haven’t tried it out on flight sim yet.
