They de-anonymized a decade of forum posts on a jobs&discussion site for economists... Some of these folks are in countries where they could be killed for what they posted. #privacy #anonymity #ethics

       @rcarback Jeez. Guys trusting some anonymous admin on the internet, who says their site is pretty totally anonymous and not using TOR/VPN.I bet that the forum DB is already sold to some nasty AD company AND dumped to  cops.And this people are going to shape the future of our economy.Guy, who published a paper is not doing an ethical thing, for sure, but I don't see how this dumpster fire could have ended in a non-catastrophic way.

       I can't stress enough how unethical this #ejmr research paper appears to have been. When you do this kind of work against a service, you follow a principle called responsible disclosure. That means you give notice to the victim what you found, and you give them a chance to fix it. The researchers here do not seem to have provided any notice. The authors should not be in academia, #yale should be ashamed, and #nber should retract this.
