54 years ago today, the effort of thousands resulted in sending humans to orbit and land on the #moon. My dad was one of them, he worked on the guidance system of the Lunar Module. He received this desk model then, and it was passed on to me after he passed. It was in bad shape, my siblings & I did much damage to it when kids, but a couple of years ago I sent it off to a person that specializes in Lunar Module model restorations & he did a great job.#Apollo11 #LunarLanding #MoonLanding #NASA

@Trilobyter "a person that specializes in Lunar Module model restorations" That has to be just about the most specialised specialisation that ever specialised!

@blueshiftnz his career has been in model creation for TV & Film (ranging from Teletubbies to one of the more recent film Batmobiles) so the Lunar Module stuff is apparently something he has a passion to do as a sideline.

@Trilobyter - Great story. That needs a Moon Rock (lunar meteorite) micromount to display with it. If you want a free one, send me a mailing address via private message.

@Trilobyter That's a great story. And I suspect everyone at the time didn't think about these sorts of 'trinkets' much, since we'd soon have weekly shuttles to the moon, so no big deal. I'm happy you were able to have it professionally restored.

@Trilobyter that is very cool. Was your father at NASA or Grumman Aerospace? My father was recognized via a large certificate, I think only 250 given out, n but not the cool model your father got. Now to figure out if our fathers knew each other.

@Trilobyter - yes.The freebie I will send will be small (a crumb), but it's the Moon and would make a cool addition to the display. Silly "pro tip" : place it on the ground and stand on it. You can then say you have "walked on the moon"

@paulc he was NASA, at the MSC (now JSC) Houston, though he did a lot of travel in those years up to the Grumman facility in NY. There are a lot of other memorabilia from his career that have been spread between me & my siblings, including the certificate with a little US flag that was flown to the moon.

@Trilobyter In that case they might have known each other but would be difficult to track down. My father’s certificate was from Grumman. No other LEM memorabilia that I know of.My father wanted to work for NASA but my mother was against it, she felt there was nothing to do at Cape Kennedy except wife swapping. I also think she was unwilling to move away from NYC and her parents.

@Trilobyter I can go down the main street and visit the Aerojet-Rocketdyne Saturn V engine. When they moved, some years back, the engine was moved too. Everyone in the area would have been angry if they *hadn't* moved it: it's a landmark. And as big as it is, the idea that it only took five to get that rocket off the ground is amazing.

@Trilobyter TWW: It is with the eyes of a child that you will know the most that the moment can show you. The world is a child's paradise. *I enjoyed your post with great trips down memory lane of all the odd models D would bring home from various Boeing project roll outs of the 50s and 60s. I would fly them about the house or rumble them across the sandlot until they collapsed. Thank you so much. OWOP

@Trilobyter My dad worked in Materials and Processes lab at Marshall. One of my distinct early memories was building a Saturn 5 model on the kitchen table when I was about 5. If was in his office when he died suddenly and at the time didn't think to try and get it.
