What do you mean "failure"? Mastodon (and the social web more broadly) are doing just fine."As we saw with the failure of Mastodon, new entry into the social media market is not impossible but it is very difficult, as it depends upon a critical mass of users making the switch together around the same time."#NiamhDunne, Associate Professor, teaching competition and EU lawhttps://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/jul/17/threads-meta-bigger-facebook-scrutiny

@KneeNeart> The novelty of not being quite happy with aspects of Mastodon and realise I could move to calckey/firefish without really losing any of what I loved at Mastodon is so refreshingAe, not only is your social graph not tied to one server, it's not even tied to one piece of software. This is absolutely the super power of the verse. It inherently distributes power over the platform across everyone involved; software devs, server admins/ mods, and most importantly, the people *using* it.

@strypeyThe fediverse has no CEO. There is nothing that steers the Network. You can't claim something has failed if it has no goals. Each individual in the fediverse is looking for something different. And yes, those who wanted to have Twitter replicated, are now disappointed. But it always grew in waves and filtered people who were trying to make it behave differently. It is a huge experiment and has attracted a critical mass to survive slowly grow it's community. That's all that matters.

@KneeNeart> what it would take to host my own server and try entice some of the south Island punks overOoh, ooh, a perfect chance for a shameless plug!If you want to hand off all the hassle of hosting providers and software updates, and focus on community facilitation, Bridge Seat Cooperative will be offering fediverse servers as-a-service. With onshore or budget options. I'm hoping we'll have a cut-price beta service up and running in a couple of months.#BridgeSeat #PlatformCooperatives

@strypeyTo them, maintaining a well-kept garden is stagnation, the garden has to grow incessantly, have all sorts of plants even if some are parasitic to others and ultimately has to eclipse the whole ecosystem, otherwise it's a "failure".

@laufi @kiriExactly. Not only does rapid growth not guarantee sustainability, it's arguably its opposite. As Casey Newton pointed out in a recent piece ...

"In the New York Times, Mike Isaac noted that the notorious flop Google+ once claimed 90 million users, only to fall apart shortly after reaching those heights. I thought the comparison was worth raising: every social network struggles to retain users over time, and the bare-bones, 1.0 version of Threads displays little on the surface to suggest how it could overtake a much more established rival like Twitter."@caseynewton, 2023https://www.platformer.news/p/five-reasons-threads-could-still@laufi @kiri

It's official, CalcKey is now FireFish!https://fedi.software/notes/9hdnh5z5hiccne81CalcKey started off as a fork of another older fediverse platform called MissKey, which I'm told is very popular with Japanese people. If you're looking for software that has features like Quote Posts, which Mastodon is missing, but still allows you to follow and interact with all your friends on Mastodon servers, FireFish might be just the ticket.@KneeNeart #CalcKey #FireFish
