@bentehOooof that's a tough request as a TCK. Not even sure where I'm "from" is. 😅

@sotolf @bentehYES. /sNah, I'm trying to imply myself as from "Earth." "Citizen of the world" is a phrase I rather like, and I'm trying to evoke it. ;)

@benjaminhollon @benteh Hmm, as usually I think I disagree with you, nobody did not get something from where they spent the most time, but then again I've met americans claiming to be Norwegian that:- Don't speak Norwegian- Never set their foot in Norway- Have no clue about the culture- See food or how people behave in the country and are vicerally disagreeing with it.

@sotolf @bentehOh, I get that. I got something from everywhere I lived. But there's nowhere I spent the "most" time—Malaysia was six years, Afghanistan was six years, tied for first place. I feel an affinity for everywhere I've lived, but don't really feel like I belong to any of those cultures.

@benjaminhollon Sure, I have lived many places as well, spread out over a longer time, 20 years in Norway, 2 in Japan and over a decade in Austria, of course I have picked up bits and pieces over the time, also from places that I have never been like the US, but maybe it's different when you grew up with a langauge that just feels viscerally right to you, someone telling something to me in English or German is wildly different than my native tongue.@benteh

@sotolf @bentehThat's awesome. I hope someday to be that comfortable with where I've lived and what it says about my identity. I'm… getting there, I think. Slowly. But it'll happen.

@benjaminhollonOne step at a time, I mean there was a long time I wanted to be "from everywhere" someone not like other people, that has taken pieces from many cultures, but well at some time I realised it wasn't really who I am, I'm a person, shaped of the culture(s) that I grew up in.My ex for example was a mistisa (Half filipina) and while she spoke Tagalog, and got pieces of the culture, she's unmistakably austrian :pWe all have our stories, all of them fascinating@benteh

@sotolf @benjaminhollon @benteh I always had trouble with the «where are you from?» question. I mean, the easy — and short — answer is Norway. But, when Norwegians ask (since they can’t figure it out from my dialect), it’s more challenging.I— was born in Oslo, but have not lived there since I turned 3— can trace my roots in Norway back to the beginning of record keeping, but in places I have never lived— went through school in 4 different countries— lived 27 years in Canada, but in 4 different cities, some thousands of kilometres and several time zones apart— currently live near Lillehammer, but while the place I live in *is* my home, the locals are very clear on the fact that I’m *not* from there— have a place on the southern Norwegian coast where I have spent most summers my entire live, but can a summer cabin be home?I have no idea where (specifically) I’m from…

@fgraver @sotolf @bentehYup, the easy answer can change depending on who I'm with. When a Malaysian or Afghan or Indian asks, "from the US" is the only answer that won't get very strange looks (unless I go into an in-depth explanation) since I'm clearly caucasian and it's hard to claim being "from" any of those countries.…

@fgraver @sotolf @bentehThen when in the US, at least in Texas, "where are you from" seems to be one of the very first questions when meeting someone (perhaps that's the "being at uni" effect). It's asked to help make connections so leading with being from all over kinda defeats the purpose and immediately seperates me from the asker.…

@fgraver @sotolf @bentehBut if I say I'm from somewhere in the US and they *do* have a connection to that place, they'll start asking questions I have no answer to. I've started leading with "I was born in California, but never lived there" so they can let it stand if that's enough and ask for more detail if they're interested, at which point I can give the full reveal.Ugh, the socially correct answer is tricky, especially when you're not sure of the correct answer.

@benjaminhollon @fgraver @benteh so the problem is not really where you're from, but what the other people there expecting of you. It sounds like?

@sotolf @benjaminhollon @fgraver i'm beginning to regret asking.i'm not interested in where other people place people based on whatever; so maybe this question would be more precise: show me a pic of a place you know very well, and feel exceedingly at home in. somewhere where when you go back, you breathe out in a different way.it doesn't have to be a nameable place, it doesn't technically have to even be geography.

@benteh @sotolf @benjaminhollon It’s an interesting sociological experiment. For some, the answer to the question «where are you from?» is as obvious as breathing. For others of us, it unleashes deep existential angst and philosophical introspection…I can’t understand why anyone would be annoyed by the question, though. Although, some might not enjoy having the validity of their responses questioned by others in the replies. 🤓

@fgraver @benteh @sotolf> I can’t understand why anyone would be annoyed by the question, though. Although, some might not enjoy having the validity of their responses questioned by others in the replies. 🤓The frequency with which the validity our answers get questioned is a reason some of us chafe at the question. ;)For me, whenever someone casually asks where I'm from, I have a moment of dread because I know that's the last moment where I'll remain a "normal person" in their eyes.
