Don’t Believe the Hype about the Nuclear “Renaissance”Never mind that it’s not, since nuclear power plants produce significant greenhouse gas... Life cycle analyses of carbon emissions from different energy sources find that, when every stage is taken into account, nuclear energy actually has a carbon footprint similar to, if not larger than, natural gas plants, almost double that of wind energy, and significantly more than solar power.#nuclearpower #solar #windhttps://www.truthdig.com/articles/dont-believe-the-hype-about-the-nuclear-renaissance/

@GW interesting. I definitely believe that lifetime carbon emissions would be greater than those for wind or solar, but for it to be similar to that of natural gas sounds pretty unlikely, to me, unless I'm totally blind to the levels of carbon emissions during mining - but were that the case, how could uranium mining be a profitable venture? Just doesn't seem to add up, to me

@LinsForest @GW I'd imagine nuclear plants to be the bread and butter, as far as the uranium market goes

@fcktheworld587 @GW Difficult to find good numbers - for any kind of lifecycle analysis. A quick search brought up this:https://www.dw.com/en/fact-check-is-nuclear-energy-good-for-the-climate/a-59853315which seems to be reasonable. So not the same as natural gas, but about a quarter (which is considerably higher than wind and solar). Cost is an issue, without massive subsidies (which I wouldn't be opposed to, if it was a clearly sustainable solution) nuclear never made it into a commercially feasible energy source - and that doesn't even count cost of waste handling and decommissioning.

@tschenkel @GW that sounds much more likely to me. I think solar and wind would be quicker to implement than nuclear, anyways - but they're gonna be more difficult to monetise on a consistent basis, on the part of corporations, so idunno how likely their adoption is, without a revolution wherein America is overthrown, and all of the very wealthy are executed - which, I honestly think is not going to happen

@LinsForest @tschenkel @GW if humanity is to survive, the people who are knowingly killing the rest of us, for personal profit, cannot be allowed to continue living; and America, the system which incentivises these types of behaviours, must also cease to exist. I'd argue that the remaining superpowers must also die, but America I would say is probably the one which must most urgently end. Death to America, and freedom for the American people

@LinsForest @tschenkel @GW yeah, fragmentation seems likely to start heavily, within 5 years at the longest. DeSantis is doing everything he can to get whackos to Florida, while ruining the living conditions; and it's going to be being taken by the ocean, relatively soon. So you're gonna have a state full of desperate crazies, who are going to be quite malleable to a strongman leader, looking to expand, into a country where they have a deep hate for the populace

@LinsForest @tschenkel @GW I wish I was capable of sharing your optimism. I tend to be pretty pessimistic, with regards to future outlook. Regardless of my thoughts on the future, I'm grateful to be alive right now. I'm glad that we have the opportunity to communicate like this :)
