#Google is trying to #kill the #OpenWeb.Using the proposed "Web Environment Integrity" means websites can select on which devices (browsers) they wish to be displayed, and can refuse service to other devices. It binds client side software to a website, creating a silo'd app.https://github.com/RupertBenWiser/Web-Environment-Integrity/blob/main/explainer.mdThis penalizes platforms on which the preferred client side software is not available.

This is an issue for #accessibility and #inclusion, in particular when the reason the software is not available is tied to the needs of marginalized groups, such as when #poverty makes it impossible to own sufficiently modern devices, etc."Web Environment Integrity" is a deeply #antisocial proposal, and goes counter to the design principles of the web.

In all honesty, this move by Google is hardly surprising. They've been trying to capture the web as their own platform for a long time. This is just the latest battle. But it also marks a particularly perverse point, in how the proposal admits it exists primarily to extract value from people. #PeopleMining at its worst.Remember when their motto was "Don't be Evil?"

@boss @interpeer Gemini is inadequate for many use-cases. How does one describe a citation in Gemini? Plain text is not unreasonably effective.I prefer to stay and fight. Support non-Google browsers, like the text-mode browsers, https://argonaut-constellation.org, and Ladybird.

@wizzwizz4 @interpeer I don't agree (completely)The big part of meaning is always plain text, as in paper.Could be a good system in schools in early stages, to introduce internet simply and with less dangers.

@boss @interpeer Even print books use formatting (e.g. italics) that can't be represented in plaintext Unicode.

@interpeer Google is Saudi funded. Like any other fossil fuel investment, captive consumers chained to a toxic product is the business model.Fossil fuel companies thwarted development of EV's and renewable energy for decades. Thwarting alternatives and competition is what oil oligarchs do. They even fund coups.https://theintercept.com/2023/02/17/google-cloud-saudi-aramco-oil/https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/05/20/larry-ellison-oracle-trump-election-challenges/https://english.aawsat.com/home/article/3665036/google-open-two-new-hqs-saudi-arabiahttps://www.vox.com/2018/4/6/17206358/saudi-crown-prince-visit-tech-silicon-valleyhttps://www.cnbc.com/2018/04/07/heres-a-look-at-who.htmlhttps://www.datacenterdynamics.com/en/news/oracle-announces-plans-for-third-saudi-arabia-cloud-region/#:~:text=Oracle%20is%20to%20establish%20a,for%20development%20weren't%20shared.https://www.hrw.org/news/2021/05/26/saudi-arabia-google-should-halt-cloud-region

@bossYou could also use a Gemini home page to serve markdown pages instead of gemtext - that'd give you all the formatting you'd want.@wizzwizz4 @interpeer

@boss @wizzwizz4 @interpeer as much as I love gemini you cant force everyone to go back to the nineties. They tasted the pics and formatting and they will resist this change. It's better to fight for an open web in that case.

@interpeer Not only that, but it will also force every Android user to install the proprietary G👀gle Play 'services', so that any freedom you thought you had* by Android being Open Source, becomes a total farce. This is thus *also* about G👀gle getting complete control of every #Android device out there.#GoogleIsEvil #GoogleIsSpyware *) Which has always been a delusion. Abandoning Android completely is the only solution.

@woodrow @interpeer That may be the case *for now*.Now consider every website being an app/software ...This is and always has been about G👀gle having control. You may be able to circumvent that to some extend today, but this is a battle you CANNOT win.Every #Enshittification happens gradually and G👀gle has enshittified Android for quite a while. There is no reason to think/believe that will ever stop.So the only solution is stop using their stuff. Completely.
