I just saw my vocal folds for the first time! (They’re fine.)I strained my voice recording my LinkedIn Learning courses back in January and have been struggling ever since. Now I get to go to speech therapy. I’m actually pretty excited about it from a speech-language perspective! I’m imagining I’ll learn all sorts of fascinating things. 🤓

I had a pre-appointment call with the speech therapist, and I'm supposed to give up black tea. I understand, but there was much gnashing of teeth. I love my afternoon tea.

@grammargirl I bargained with my ENT and speech therapist to stop drinking green tea at 10 am. Ginger tea the rest of the day. It's made a difference.

@grammargirl Oh that's not fun at all, I'm sorry to hear that (from one tea drinker to another).Would green tea work? I'm a lover of flavored black teas (Harney and Sons Tower of London is my absolute favorite) -- but I've found a good Japanese houjicha, or roasted green tea, can also scratch that itch (for me! YMMV).

@grammargirl Maybe try Throat Coat tea. Some book narrators use it, and I speak for a living and use it sometimes. It is a bunch of helpful stuff for your throat, with no caffeine with the one I use. I like caffeine, though, depending. I don't know much about it, but it seems to help.

@JamesBoxer10 I actually do have a bunch of Throat Coat tea. I lived on it when I was recording my LinkedIn Learning courses over the winter. I've grown to like it too. I feel like it helped a little, but not enough.

For those keeping track at home, the working theory is that when I thrashed my voice recording all the LinkedIn Learning videos over the winter, I developed a bad "clearing my throat" habit that is hurting my vocal folds in an ongoing way.So my homework is to consciously stop doing it. I'm trying to first, actually notice that I do it. And then take a sip of water or suck on a lemon drop instead.I also have a bunch of stretching exercises to do.#podcasting

@grammargirl @hellmanmd Tannic acid. When maple leaves dry up and fall down, and rain soaks through them, that is tannic acid - weak, but there. The reason that we have to boil acorns, and boil them again, and again, and... Tannins. Raw, they are too bitter for us to eat safely.

@Kit Interesting. I’ll ask about humming next time. They did tell me it is better to do one quick cough than to do throat clearing, which was counterintuitive.

Speech Therapy UpdateI had another appointment today, and now I have "mmm" vocalizations to practice along with my neck and jaw stretches. I get to walk around saying things like "Morgan makes margaritas," and "Moon pies are marvelous." You make the "mmm" sound in the front of your mouth instead in your throat, and I need to learn to talk more front-ish (for lack of a better word).#podcasting

An interesting observation is that I had a lot of trouble with my voice again during my radio interview yesterday ... and what am I during an interview? Tense. All those muscles I've been working so hard to relax were probably tense as tense can be. Plus, I wasn't focused on breathing from my diaphragm.

And finally, here's a totally weird thing: If I imagine I'm ~singing~ a sentence, I'm less likely to let it come from the back of my throat. The speech therapist said this is normal/known. (I can't remember which.)

@grammargirl stutterers typically don’t stutter when they sing, and many use singsong voices over common triggers to avoid getting tripped up!
