@selea Are you *sure* you need a cloud-key for Unifi? Is it for the controller?

@selea Do you want "mesh" ("no cables between APs") or do you want "seamless roaming" (802.11r/k/v)? They are kinda different things.

@selea what about Sophos? It's possible to host the Firewall on a device of your choice, getting a free Home Licence with restrictions in the number of IP Addresses, but fully functional inkluding AP Management.

@feld @selea You don't need a cloud key but you do have to set up a device to run the controller daemon, even if just to do the initial configuration.

@seleaOpenWRT can do both. I played around with mesh a bit (but had no use case for it) and have 802.11r/k/v running right now. But you have to configure it manually on all APs and since it does not leave many output in the logs it's a bit trial and error. Probably not what you're looking for if you used Meraki before.@finlaydag33k

It has never "supported" FreeBSD. I just packaged it and tons of people use it. Then someone later packaged it for OpenBSD too.It needs Java and MongoDB. Give it that and it will run.I even ran it on MongoDB 4.x for a few years before they officially added support for it too. The workaround to get it running on Mongo 4 was trivial and I even told the devs, but they did nothing.

@selea MikroTik recently came out with WiFi 6 access points, see product name `cAP ax`.You can also look at WiFI 6 APs that support OpenWRThttps://openwrt.org/toh/views/toh_available_16128_ax-wifi

it is a strange strange world where the easiest method to get UniFi running on your own hardware today is:1. Install FreeBSD2. pkg install unifi73. sysrc unifi_enable=YES4. service unifi start

@selea The cloud-key is only required if you plan to use the rest of the Unifi ecosystem, like cameras. If all you need are the APs, you can run the controller software in a Docker container. You can also run no controller at all, and pair the APs to their phone app, but I don't know how (or if) that works with more than one AP.I'm not sure how they compare with enterprise-grade stuff in terms of features, but I have a Unifi 6 Lite that has been running for a couple of years with no issues.

@selea also, this only applies to some AP models, but in my case the 6 Lite has an unlockable bootloader, so installing OpenWRT is an option if Ubiquiti eventually decides to ruin the fun like every other big corporation.

also a unique benefit of running UniFi on BSD is that the websocket library they use for integration with their cloud platform is embedded in a Java JAR they ship with the software and it is missing shared libraries compiled for anything except Windows/Mac/Linux.So the cloud feature is 100% broken meaning there is no possible way they can ever talk to your server.
