I decided to try my hand at a bit of product photography. This is the Gentleman Powermatic 80 Silicium 40mm with the movement on display. Do you think this photo could pass for an ad?#Photography #Product #MechanicalWatch #Precision #Tissot #Powermatic80 #Watch #StillLife

@ashqinmoe Yes and no. Overall it definitely has the composition and feel of an ad (maybe it needs a scotch on the rocks in the background haha) but I’ve read that professional product photographers will need to use fancy stuff like tilt-shift lenses or at least focus stacking (I think?) to get all the details in sharp focus. That’s not to take away anything from this shot, it’s very well done with the limited capabilities of your equipment.

It's a great photo, but I think advertises would want the whole watch in focus. I've been trying to learn focus stacking, and this seems like a great use case for it so you can keep the soft background

@ishotfirst that's a good point and focus stacking is definitely somerthing I should investigate in more depth.

@SirNameless_1 fair point. I didn't realize tilt shift lenses were used in product photography, but it makes sense and certainly something I am going to investigate now along with focus stacking. 💜

@ashqinmoe I wish I could claim first-hand experience but I read about it in an actual book once 😁 and remember being surprised that tilt shift is for more than just architecture. Since I wrote my first reply I also remembered the name of a guy who does watches that might interest you. Check him out here: https://blog.mingthein.com/technique/ (watch articles near the bottom).

@SirNameless_1 will definitely check it out. I know tilt shift is used sometimes in macro photography because otherwise the lens is blocking a light source you want to angle in a specific way or because trying to get less extreme distortions on something. So I figure it relates to this. I do own a PC-E Micro NIKKOR 45mm f/2.8D ED, which is a tiltshift that I've been trying to use for architecture photography, but it is also designed to be used as a macro lens.

Gracias !!!
