@aks I disagree, Cinny is missing a lot more important features. No threads, no voice calls, no widgets.

For #Matrix users, my personal advice is to avoid using Element as a client and treat it more as a "account dashboard."As a client it's lacking features that most may want, such as custom emotes and stickers or custom notification sounds.I recommend something like Cinny or Nheko instead, but there are plenty of other choices. Of course, if Element works for you, then good! But I know many people who have been happier using Cinny than Element.IMO Element shouldn't have the "flagship" status it seems to have.

I wrote a guide/tutorial/thing for using Matrix for those curious, since unfortunately it's more complicated than chat program should be, but at least it's not Discord. :P https://akselmo.dev/posts/how-to-use-matrix/(Yes yes XMPP and IRC crowd I am with you too here, I just ended up on Matrix myself due to KDE having their stuff over there.)

When it comes to comparing #Discord and various #Matrix clients, here's why I prefer Matrix over Discord:- No ads up my ass- No flashy boing boing woooom animations- No annoying GAMER aesthetic - Most clients let you change sounds- **You can change your client if you don't like the current one**- You can host your own server (Discord "servers" are not servers, you've been fooled by their marketing)- good ol' FOSS- You can actually send custom stickers and emojis for free lol- If you host your own homeserver, Mjolnir automates a lot of moderation for you when subscribed to proper banlists, it's pretty nice.Same could be said about XMPP and IRC, to be honest. I'm fine with all three, and I have to keep repeating this because otherwise someone gets angry at me because internet. Is Matrix the be-all-end-all? No, I still use Discord because some of my friends are there. But I can't have it on for long due to how inaccessible that thing is. It's funny how *angry* an application can make me. Some thought why I am frustrated on Discord so often and well, it's the app itself. Thank you, brains, lol.Matrix clients have catching up to do for the big corporate money clients, that's for sure. But it's not "this good this bad" situation, more like many Matrix clients (Cinny, Nheko, Neochat..) do the things I care about way better than Discord ever will be.(BetterDiscord is not a solution, I don't got time tinkering with some configs to make a client good, I just want a client that doesn't attack my eyeballs every time I open it without too much hassle.)

To continue this "lunatic rambling about chat protocols, the thread"I actually, genuinely love IRC. It's so god dang simple. It works, it sends characters, it receives characters. And it's Finnish invention IIRC! 🇫🇮But the clients are mostly for the nerdy types. I'm sure there's clients that work for everyone. And having to set up a bouncer can deter some if they don't want to miss out on conversations when their PC is off for a moment. Again, nerdy chat client. Still lovely to me, but if I tried to get most people I know to IRC, they would just go "why?"XMPP is another I'm very keen on. It's been a while since I've used it. The EVE Online alliances I were in (BRAVE, i think also TEST) had XMPP/Jabber server where I joined with Pidgin. We chatted and got pings to join fights, then hopped on Mumble for comms. Good stuff. Still, it can be a bit hard sell for someone who has gotten used to modern stuff, especially when I think of those times. But also maybe it has changed?Again, I ended up on Matrix due to KDE using it a lot for their project chats. If KDE hopped to IRC or XMPP suddenly, then I would follow. Discord? I don't think I would participate a lot in any conversations (probably for the best ;P )

To wrap this up, in the end, use what you need to use. I am not here to judge you to the depths of The Void if you think Discord is better for your usecase. I may have done that before, I don't even remember. Point is, I don't do it (anymore). My wish is that FOSS projects would give other FOSS projects a chance every now and then. IMO FOSS projects should support FOSS projects when possible, there's strength in that. But I am not joining a Discord "server" unless I really, really have to endure the awful client that makes me upset every time I use it. I'm not even being dramatic here, it just fucks with my brains so bad. I had to disable all the moving animations and things with the reduced motion setting and it still has some random BS like the fricking gift box icon that I keep accidentally clicking. On mobile it's even worse. And when I use it, it's like 5-10 minutes and I'm out. I'm not gonna be reachable there. If your Thing:tm: requires me to be around Discord most of the time then it's not for me. Not probably a big loss, but anyway: I know I can be annoying :V PS. I haven't even mentioned Telegram, which is no-go for me because it asks my phone number. No thanks, my number changed and I'm not putting that anywhere to avoid spam calls.
