Okay, so, return to work.I feel like there is a systemic inequality that people haven't really been talking about as much.Bosses and extroverts and neurotypical people are saying "oh, we don't like emails and Zoom calls, because there's information that doesn't get communicated through these methods."What? What is that information? If you are communicating a substantial amount of secret coded information that can't make it into the literal syntax of the words that you are saying, you should be concerned about that. Both because you are doing a shitty job at communicating, but also because of the types of people you are choosing to exclude.

@steven @EpiphanicSynchronicity I personally think it’s because some people (mostly senior) want to be able to “read the room” and adjust their message to please, fit in etc…once in an email it’s difficult to backtrack from a paper trail…(again is shitty management and bad communication)

I am much better at my job, now that I work from home. The difference is that if people need to communicate with me by email or IM or phone or video call, they think about what they want to say ahead of time and then they tell me the words that communicate the ideas that they want me to know. It's a good system.

I think there's a good amount of social information that is maybe useful to some people for practical purposes, that people round up to "body language" or something. Stuff that I don't really understand. But I also suspect that there are some pretty massive harms from using that in a professional setting.

@StephZihms @steven @EpiphanicSynchronicity I am not a manager, I’m ADD, and have a severely (and wonderfully) neurodivergent spouse. And I will say this:Being able to “read the room” (which I am sometimes terrible at) is a valuable skill that has less to do with trying to “backtrack” a comment and more to do with not making that comment to begin with.I am a chronic introvert and still find in-person communication more clear than text. We’re all different.
