How did we get to the point that following stopped meaning "I want to see everything by this person" and turned into "maybe sometimes show this to me if you feel like it, no pressure" :woozy_baa:

@volpeon thinking on it, maybe it can be attributed to the normalization of ads being pushed into timelines?

@volpeon i keep thinking part of the problem is also the shift from feeds-per-person/topic (RSS feeds per blog, someone's personal art topic on a forum, etc) to a single global feed (content from everyone you follow jumbled together)i would love a social media that functions more like an RSS reader; you'd have a sidebar with the people/topics/etc you follow, and a number of unread posts by them next to it, and then you click on those and exclusively see THEIR posts

@volpeon like if one person posts 100 posts a day and another only posts 1 really cool artwork a day, the other person is gonna drown out the cool art on your feed! if they were separated with their own unread count there would be no way to miss the cool art person's art even if they don't post as much

@volpeon I just read a lot about this! https://pluralistic.net/2023/01/21/potemkin-ai/#hey-guysIn short, every thing you see from your actual followers is something you don't see from the platform's advertisers or algorithmic manipulation.
