@lowqualityfacts Yeah. I don't get the complexity, I really don't. Picking a server was a huge draw card for me, because it reminded me of IRC, and consequently I spent like 15 minutes browsing joinmastodon.org/servers checking out all options, but once I did, and I clicked that "Create Account" button, I was ay for away. There's absolutely nothing complicated about Mastodon, IMO. Nothing at all.

@lowqualityfacts To be fair, if your eyes glaze over when you hear the word “instance”, you’re going to have trouble sometimes finding and following people who are not on yours. Other than that, if you use a mobile app, the experience is pretty friendly.

@lowqualityfacts I do think the explanation of what an instance is and how to pick one could be clearer for people signing up for the first time. I tried making a mastadon account and when I go up to deciding on an instance it felt like a lot of information and I just closed the browser and gave up.

@lowqualityfacts There are some flaws that could use improvement.But I keep thinking how my first tech job was IT support for clerical workers who moved from electric typewriters to WordPerfect 5.0, then to Microsoft Word on Windows 3.1, in the space of a few years.So I think people should be expected to manage the transition from one platform to another, when those two platforms share so many conventions.

@lowqualityfacts to be fair, subscribing across instances, and even more so interacting with posts linked somewhere else (ie also on other instances) could have a way better user experience.I know there's browser extensions and bookmarklets and whatnot, but the user experience for sure could be a lot smoother.

It definitely feels more slow paced and less addictive than Twitter. For me the sign up process was also quite a bit harder since I had to find an instance that was open to new users first.I don't think it's wrong to highlight the differences, but the Mastodon failed!!! crowd ia quite annoying.
