some apps are a good idea, but they can't make money. they should definitely exist, and someone should definitely be making a living on coding them. but this money must come out of thin air, somehow.

@thor are these the apps that end up going the data vacuum monetization route?

@Brycicle i was actually thinking about VC funded stuff that isn't sustainable. i heard Notion raised a shit ton of cash and people are saying they're grossly overvalued. it's a useful app for organising information but they raised 300 million on a valuation of 1 billion, which is ridiculous.

@thor ah, that’s an insane valuation for them. I suppose that’s one use for VC’s. Convince them to fund a necessary but difficult to monetize app, selling them on billion dollar valuations while their eyes roll back into their head

@Brycicle i was also thinking about apps that never existed but would be useful if they did, but the target audience can't or won't pay for them.

@Brycicle one thing i was thinking about would scratch my own itch. ADHD time management app. it would also work for old forgetful people. you need notifications designed for a deaf idiot. i'm almost tempted to say it should be a separate device from your phone. i find notifications on my phone to be a bit unreliable. or i just don't hear them sometimes. my ears kind of turn off. and right now i have two separate apps for it: calendar and another app named Due that keeps nagging me until i do stuff. i kind of wish those two schedules were in one app. and also, the Due app let's you set a sound per event. what i need is a different sound every time there's a notification. my brain just shuts it out if it's the same sound every time. needs to be more unpredictable and surprising. i think this is an example of something people with ADHD would really want, but no one's making that app, and only 5% of people would be interested. and if you have ADHD you're often broke, so it's not the best market segment to sell to...

@thor I like it, especially the different noises that way you can immediately know what the reminder is for without having to check it. The syncing across all devices would be difficult for mass publishing though. Sure, you could make it for your specific combination of devices, but not for everyone’s. Could design for a specific ecosystem like apple

@Brycicle the different sounds, you misunderstand... the Due app does the specific noises per reminder. what i want is to be forced to check because the phone just made a weird noise, lol

@Brycicle the only person who could do a good job of designing such an app is a person who has ADHD, but people with ADHD never finish their projects...

@Brycicle ADHD brains seek novelty. i want to be surprised by my notifications to pull me out of hyperfocus. i get used to the reoccurring sameish sounds rather quickly, so i end up ignoring them often. because my brain says "i hear that sound all the time so it's nothing i need to worry about"

@thor @Brycicle for this to work on me the voltage would have to be substantial otherwise it would never get noticed during my hyperfocus periods

@ralf @Brycicle one thing i have enabled on my phone is for the flashlight to strobe when there is a notification, which helps a bit, but it needs to come on a little stronger, maybe like a disco 😆

@thor I see, so eventually that association of “oh X sound means this” becomes desensitized since you’ve heard it so many times before?

@thor thanks. I understand more of what ADHD entails now too. I’ve had a passive idea that I have some ADHD, but this conversation has put that idea to rest. I may have some degree of it, but it doesn’t seem to be “full-blown” as I can’t entirely relate to some of the things you’ve been describing

@Brycicle there are individual differences, but zoning out and not paying attention to your surroundings is pretty common.
