TIL there is no such thing as an alpha wolf. It's just bad science based on observations in captivity where wolves fight because they are bored. Wolves actually live in loving non hierarchal familieshttps://www.zmescience.com/feature-post/natural-sciences/animals/mammals/theres-no-such-thing-as-alpha-males-or-females-in-wolf-packs/https://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/150gi0k/til_there_is_no_such_thing_as_an_alpha_wolf_its/

@todayilearned People who behave like "alpha wolves" behave like literal scared caged animals and it's so perfectly fitting.

@todayilearned @BayesForDays Some scholars were ahead of the curve on this. Barry Lopez described the alpha analogy as "poor" and said the male hunter–male leader image of the wolf pack is "misleading but, unconsciously, I am sure, it is perpetuated by males, who dominate this field of study." His book "Of Wolves and Men" (1978) has a lot of nuance on the nature of a pack's hierarchy in the wild

@todayilearned I can’t find a link to back this up but I remember hearing that a native scientist discovered the deer in charge was usually just the tallest who could see what the rest of the herd was voting for by the direction they faced. ie wether they’re going to the creek or the meadow

This is not recent news, but it's always a good tidbit to boost. SO much bad social theory from that one flawed study.

@todayilearned @joshbuchea So did we train dogs to follow social hierarchies when we domesticated them? There is definitely a pecking order in our house.
