@Spergo1875 being armed is good but a good door is fantastic. Steel at minimum, solid core is preferable. it's ok if its heavy if your frame and hinges are good. a black tried to get thru my door for like 10 minutes straight with a 4 foot steel pipe hammering on it and nothing happened, just cosmetic damage. didn't even have to use the kemono friends AK altho i had it ready

@Paultron @Spergo1875 Solid door, and at minimum replace the piddly 1/2" frame screws with 3 1/2" deck screws. For a real upgrade, replace the strike plate and add hinge guards with something like Door Armor. Most doors without reinforced strike plates can be pried open with a long enough crowbar for leverage. All that's keeping most doors shut is a 1/2" screw and 1/2-3/4" of pine.

@InceptionState @Paultron @Spergo1875 Getting a door with multiple bolt points and strike plates is of course the best. But most people aren't going to those lengths. Just replacing the screws is often sufficient to buy you time to lock and load.You need to protect the hinges from brute-force strikes, the strike plate from leveraged prying, have a real deadbolt so it can't be shimmed, and use long deck screws instead of framing screws.You don't have to outrun the bear... just your neighbors.

Also that shotgun is basically just âpoint and shootâ without the need for more precise aiming. 1 small clarification on the âbox of shellsâ - get buckshot, not birdshot. Not saying birdshot wonât work as a deterrent and itâs better than nothing, but itâs typically only effective (on intruder sized targets) at point blank range. Buckshot puts considerable distance and damage capability between you and the target.

I was speaking more to OP suggesting that itâs an option with a lower barrier to entry and shorter learning curve. I added the caveat of proper ammo selection to increase distance and efficacy in a close quarters situation to help reduce the chances of someone getting close enough to take your weapon. Another thing to consider is if you live in an apartment with adjoining units or a house with more occupants than yourself. Buckshot reduces the chances of a projectile over-penetrating walls and doing collateral damage.Personally? I live in a home with multiple other occupants, but Iâm well trained with my equipment so Iâm grabbing the pistol 10/10 times. Also couldnât agree more that with the way the world is going I highly encourage everyone to purchase and learn to use at least 1 of each pistol/rifle/shotgun. Having all 3 ensures you have coverage for most situations from defense to hunting.As for black rifles: the AR pattern rifle has gotten increasingly inexpensive over the passed few years. You can now purchase a reliable entry level rifle for $400. Those kind of prices allow you to get the AR for defense and a K98 clone for hunting : )
