_The Princess Bride_ flopped, and it's now one of the most beloved films in the U.S._Firefly_ was dropped after 14 episodes, people saw it in syndication reruns and it became a cult classic.Goodbye to that era, I guess.

@Archivist It is very sad; it brings to mind the dead of Revival Cinemas (I can't now find the article I'm thinking of, but basically, now that all of Fox's archives belong to Disney, hundreds of older movies are no longer available for licensing for Sunday matinees or dinning cinemas)

@herhandsmyhands Well, piracy is going to take off because of this.

@herhandsmyhands What I don't understand is why doesn't this effect how copyright can be used. You shouldn't be able to benefit from locking a work from view and still be able to keep control of it. Where's the benefit to creativity, corporate or individual, much less the public?

@herhandsmyhands I hate how short sighted everything is (now) & it’s all about making money hand over fist for shareholders regardless of how much it actually harms a business.

@herhandsmyhands @AmandaWeaver We seem to be returning to the era of media conglomerates telling you when to watch things. Streaming was suppose to expose the long tail and let you watch on your schedule. Now it's just a movie theater without the sticky floors, except an even shorter release window and likely no eventual option to buy a physical copy.

@herhandsmyhands This is just going to make people go back to piracy. They made streaming to defeat it, but they’re inviting it back in. Dumbasses.

@Limecello it's "make money today, don't give a shit about literally tomorrow" for absolutely everything. And that's how we keep losing companies that were literal cultural institutions--like SEARs, for example.

@orionkidder I mean, yes, but they are also literally destroying the industry.People can't make a living with the current system, and one of the reasons to withdraw things from streaming is to not pay residuals. Eventually we all get fucked, because people move on to something else where they can eat.

@herhandsmyhands I don't understand the need to remove digital products for cost cutting reasons. Cloud storage is one of the cheaper options in tech. Bandwidth and licensing cost more.

@cormac Corporations save tax dollars by sinking million-dollar productions; it has nothing to do with how regular people think of expenses and savings.

@herhandsmyhands EXACTLY. It's awful, and shortsighted, and honestly there should be some major trustbusting as just a few companies own basically everything now.
