We reached a new milestone in ensuring the openness of digital markets. Last week, 7 companies notified us they qualify as 'Gatekeepers' under the Digital Market Act.We will check their submission before designating them. They will have 6 months to comply with the #DMA and, among others, be unable to:- lock in users in their ecosystem;- decide which apps you need pre-installed or which app store to use;- treat their own products and services more favourably.More: https://europa.eu/!H4FQJM

@EU_Commission This "decide which apps you need pre-installed or which app store to use;" - is particularly useful to be stop.It is a waste of battery and memory having dozens of useless apps pre-installed and locked in smartphones.Thank you, EU!

@EU_Commission "Their messaging apps will have to interoperate with others."Does that mean that if I have, lets say, Signal, would I be able to text people on WhatsApp?Because "their messaging apps" is clear. But the "others" is a bit vague, unspecified.And 6 months to implement that... I dream of that happening, but I doubt they would do in such a short time.What will happen if they don't? Fines?

Even as someone not in the EU this is exciting to me as it will hopefully force these companies to make global changes.Google and Apple being unable to lock people into their ecosystems sounds especially great along with Apple needing to allow people to use other app stores (though I plan to continue using Android). I think this is a great step towards a more open future and I wish other countries would take this as an example of how to support their citizens in an increasingly digital world.

@EU_Commission Even that I do normally support EU Commissions decisions I would then say this has gone way way to far. The Digital Markets Act should never have been implemented because its really stepping over the boundaries and in worst case hurts us in EULike this act is literally the reason for some companies literally goes around EU with some of their products ( And the funny part even one of the companies on the list )

@EU_Commission great first steps although I'm a bit sceptical.Lock-in to ecosystems is often done implicitly by network effect. Even if you can export data, it won't make leaving any easier for an individual user.Secondly, app stores are only half of the 'trap'. Google play services for example are 'handy' shortcuts for developers that make using an app without Google's ecosystem practically impossible, unofficial hacks aside.
