"No one will listen to you if you're angry when you talk about racism." Well, fuck, no one will listen when I'm not, so I'll do whatever the fuck I want, thank you very much.

@epicdemiologist @StillIRise1963 that's how I see polite, liberal society in a nutshell. Everything's fine as long as we aren't yelling 🙄

@bezorp @epicdemiologist @StillIRise1963 why do you say liberal society?indeed the problem is people in general prefer placid lies over ugly truthsand indeed liberals do suffer from this problembut it seems to me to be primarily a problem of conservatives, especially on the topic of racismif you or reality challenges their biases, *you're* the problem for making them aware of it, not that their bias is the problem. because their bias always existed in serene cognitive dissonance-free unchallenged acceptance. such that when challenged on their bs, well how dare you introduce cognitive dissonance between their toxic beliefs and its ugly real world effects? *you* did that! "telling me racism exists is the real racism" uggh

@accretionist @bezorp @epicdemiologist @StillIRise1963 To understand, read the full text of "Letter From Birmingham Jail", from which I paraphrased in this post:https://mstdn.social/@ricardoharvin/110718827583387174

@ricardoharvin @accretionist @bezorp @epicdemiologist @StillIRise1963 yes! Racists and bigots are unlikely to be convinced to change their views, but the liberal moderate already agrees with equality so they don't need to be convinced of that. They only need to grasp the necessity of rocking the boat in order to achieve change. That's a much lower hurdle.

@evohagan @accretionist @bezorp @epicdemiologist @StillIRise1963 Sadly, it's literally the highest hurdle of them all.If that were not so, and they truly believed in full equality for all, then no convincing would be necessary as their personal moral conviction would naturally move them to act.Conditional equality, "patience", "it's not the right time", is not equality, at all. It is siding with the oppressor, full stop.

@ricardoharvin @accretionist @bezorp @epicdemiologist @StillIRise1963 is it really higher than convincing bigots they're wrong? I'm not so sure, but I don't mind that you disagree.

@evohagan @accretionist @bezorp @epicdemiologist @StillIRise1963 I'm 65 next month. My life experience proves me correct."How long must we wait for your progress?, James Baldwin asked. And Dr. King in Letter From Birmingham Jail noted his greatest disappointment is the white moderate counseling patience, not the racists and bigots. We're telling you "well-meaning" white people are the biggest problem because they don't act.

@evohagan white 'moderates' are the biggest hurdle bc they are not outlier violent racist...they ARE the mainstream. They are the bulk of the system that oppresses and upholds oppression in subtle but constant and pernicious and unapologetic ways. @ricardoharvin @accretionist @bezorp @epicdemiologist @StillIRise1963

@StillIRise1963 Next thing you know, you will be told you have to "be patient." That's the ish I heard back in the '60s, during the height of the Civil Rights Movement. You wanted to smack such well-meaning people (at least that's how they saw themselves) for telling you to be patient acquiring rights they themselves had and had the luxury of taking for granted.

@SharonGibson3 @StillIRise1963 Coming up on 20 years ago we trans people were told we needed to "be patient" because the fight needed to be for marriage equality first, instead of across the board equality for everyone in all regards. Even when Dems had a trifecta.Incrementalism not a valid tactic for civil rights equality unless the goal is to hold back progress.

@servelan @Frances_Larina @StillIRise1963 Rosa Parks wasn't the first person to refuse to yield a bus seat to a white passenger. Earlier, a pregnant, unwed Black teenager was arrested for doing what Parks had done. But the NAACP, to which Parks belonged, didn't want to take up that particular case. The organization didn't want the focus to be on the teen's status as an unwed mom. (It was 1955. This mattered.) That's an example of a strategic tactic to advance, not hamper, civil rights.
