       I'm thinking about getting a .22LR conversion for AR-15, but I'm not sure if the gas venting through the gas tube is a problem. I don't have an adjustable gas block.

       @gat fixed or adjustableyou're still cleaning it more often due to .22lr being dirtier than most cartridges already

       @gat@mu.zaitcev.nu this is really stirring my noodle the more I think about it. I had also considered a .22lr conversion kit in the past. Sure throwing an older low internal volume can on or just using hotter ammo is a hamfisted fix to potential undergassing. And I suppose that's why they include a couple different springs with most of those kits. To account for differing dwell time (slower slug)/gas port sizes/gas system lengths. There's bound to be some combination of ammo/spring/cleanliness level that makes these work in most rifles.... but I dunno, just seems a little hinky to me.

       @gat better to buy a 10/22 and convert it to an ar "style" stock. I know it's not the same internally, but it avoids a lot of the issues

       @Evirus One more question: is everything all right when you restore it back to 5.56?

       @gat I think these are generally simple blowback

       @gat The amount of gas needed will depend on how heavy the new bolt carrier group is and what ammo you're shooting.Obviously a .22LR round will put out more gas and have a better chance of cycling than a .22 short subsonic round.The good news is most stock guns are overgassed from the factory to give them a better chance of cycling well on bad quality ammo so you probably have a decent chance of not having any issues.

       @bitterrealist @gat the 22lr conversions generally use a blowback bolt instead of the gas system to cycle

       @shibao .22LR bullet: .223 in (5.7 mm) - .2255 in (5.73 mm)5.56 NATO bullet: 5.70 mm (0.224 in)So it’s gonna vary a bit, but these were never meant for extreme accuracy@gat @Rocc

       @Evirus Thanks, I think you're right. Although I was jumping from extreme to extreme and thinking about Winchester Wildcat now. I saw it at a gun show and was impressed by its low weight.
