I’m watching “The People’s Court”. A viewer sent in a question: in Florida, can a landlord write into the lease that a tenant is responsible for repairs less than a certain cost?Sounds like a great way to a guarantee that all repairs cost more than that amount. “Huh, this pipe is leaking a little bit. Well, time to make sure it leaks a whole awful lot.”

@binsk And regardless of legality, it seems like a really terrible thing to even ask for.

@binsk Heh, I could see that being more reasonable.

@tek Don't know if it would hold up in court, but the signer did give their consent if it is legal.

@tek In theory you can write anything on a contract. As long as it's not considered completely one-sided and is signed freely, it is valid.Unless of course women are involved, then they win no matter what. Gynocentrism 101

@tek You can write anything on a contract with any clauses as long as they are not illegal and they create a mutual exchange. It can't only favor one side.So the landlord can put that condition in his contract and in case the tenant breaks his property to increase the amount, it would be technically a crime although he couldn't prove it. He's stupid, but it's still ok contractually speaking.

@tek Oh, ok. The fact that courts overwhelmingly favor women, so no matter what side she would be, she would win anyway. There have been several cases of tenants living for free and then winning the right to cancel the contract with all debt forgiven.

@tek I have AppleCare for my phone. I was told at the Apple Store that scratches on my phone were not sufficiently deep to trigger the insurance policy. 🤷

@skypage My issue isn’t so much with the legality — a TV judge said it was legit, so I guess it is — as that it seems like such an incredibly bad thing to ask a tenant to do.From the tenant’s perspective: “Oh, I have to pay for all cheap repairs? OK. I’ll make sure they all become expensive repairs so that it’s not my problem.”
