Having travelled and worked in many countries where English is not spoken as the first language, and having no proficiency in any language other than English, I concur. No-one in any of those countries has ever suggested I should go back to my home country for being in their country and being unable to speak Italian, French, Dutch, German, Chinese, Japanese, etc. It is an exceptionally vile English/American trope.

@Tr4bend0 I once overheard an old woman mutter to her colleague that my French was “comme un vache Espanol” in a Paris bakery once, but I just grinned at her and said “Mooooo!”Otherwise, I’ve always found people to be very tolerant and helpful. Admittedly my experiences have mainly been in cities, so I take the point that mileages may vary in the provinces.

@incitatus @Tr4bend0 Yeah, in NYC, people tend to be tolerant and helpful. We have a reputation of being rude, but it's more of an "I'm Walkin' Here!" thing. We don't want people to stand in the middle of thoroughfare.
