The complete saying was originally “A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.”

@stux Excellent application of an 80:20 rule ... 20% of the master's skills does 80% of the master's work.

@stux Reminds me of the saying "Blood is thicker than water", but its original version has opposite meaning "The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb". #TIL

@stux Unfortunately this doesn’t work in a capitalist society. Companies realize that one person has a good understanding of many things. Instead of hiring 3 people to do work on a specific specialty, they will instead hire one person and try to work them three-times as hard. :nkoSip:

@stux I've spent my 40-year career broadening my generalist skillset as needed. I can't find a decent job that values that in corporate America. 😕

@stux That makes me feel somewhat better about how my own skills have been spread out more thinly but broadly over the years.

@stux Working help desk I had someone come to my cube with an emergency (for them). I was already working on something along with another task that required minimal attention. As I'm working on the emergency for this "Profession Work Coach" he shares the wise knowledge that multitasking means no task gets its proper attention.Looking back I wish I had agreed and handed his laptop back to him.
