I'm #Transgender, specifically #Nonbinary and #Genderqueer, and my pronouns are they/them or he/him.I spent my teenage years repeatedly coming out, first as lesbian and later as trans (a couple of times), before finally learning about nonbinary identities in my mid-twenties, but for various and sundry complicated reasons wasn't able to access transition care until early 2022 at the beginning of my thirties. #Introduction

I held a class A CDL and worked as an over-the-road #TruckDriver for almost 6 years and stopped recently due to #Disability and now work adjacent to passenger commercial transportation. in the past I've also worked in #Union #UnionStrong shops as a class B CDL bus operator (#SMARTTD GO-875) and a paratransit driver (#ATU 662, #Teamsters 848 where I was a shop steward trainee).I'm incredibly geeky about all things #Safety. your regulations were written in blood. #Introduction

in addition to my own #Union background, my zayde was, as well as a tinkerer and jack-of-all-trades, an extra in the film industry way back before they were called background actors.he helped spur the movements that eventually led to background actors being eligible for membership in #SAG and #AFTRA although he personally didn't end up with enough film credits from after that happened to qualify for MPTF benefits. #Introduction

regarding my background in labour #Activism is that I was raised in and around #FolkMusic, particularly at the California Traditional Music Society's now-defunct #CTMS Summer Solstice Folk Music, Dance, and Storytelling #MusicFestival as well as Lark in the Morning #MusicCamp. I've been supported by family in any activism I pursue, which has also included #MayDayWalkouts and #BDS actions.this is far from the only environment which shaped me, but it feels important here. #Introduction

when I was originally writing this thread yesterday, I misestimated how much I was originally going to get done. not only failure to account for mountain grades and city traffic but.I'm #Disabled. I'm #Neurodivergent and #Deaf (well, #HardOfHearing but I say deaf for simplicity's/cultural sake) and I have #HereditaryMultipleExostosis. bone spurs grow in places they're not supposed to, associated #ChronicPain, plus other health problems.and some days it's more than others. #Introduction

along with being deaf/hard of hearing, I have some #SpeechImpairment #SpeechImpediment as well as #SelectiveMutism plus #Dyslexia.this affects pretty much every aspect of my life.I went through #SpeechTherapy for all of primary/secondary school, but verbal speech is still always a conscious effort. good days you can't tell I have problems; bad days? I'm nigh unintelligible.I use #AAC on my phone as well as #AmericanSignLanguage and #PidginSignedEnglish. #Introduction

fun fact, my spouse is also deaf!my hearing does, however, return to normal right around 8,000 Hz and remains perfect all the way up through hearing electricity and lightbulbs. but conversation is challenging at best.got my first pair of #HearingAids last year, after most of a lifetime of complaining something was wrong with my hearing, and a severe worsening of my #Tinnitus that prompted me to seek help, as it was also impacting my #MentalHealth. #Introduction

in addition to everything else, I am a part-time undergraduate #CollegeStudent.I went back to school to community college after a seven year gap, and then transferred to #UniversityOfNebraskaOmaha. I started out with a major in #ReligiousStudies and a minor in #EmergencyManagement but changed my program to #InterdisciplinaryStudies to better fit the breadth of previous educational and life experience I have. in case the Hebrew in my display name (which is my Hebrew name) wasn't enough, I am #Jewish. my family is mostly #Ashkenazi from the Pale of Settlement. both sides of my family fled to North America during the pogroms in the 1800s, my mother's family to Canada and my father's family to the United States.I grew up #Conservadox, flitted between #Chabad and #ModernOrthodox as a teen/young adult and then went #OTD, and am now finding my own derech and my way back. mostly. #Introduction

the more complicated bit is of course that every American Jew is expected to have a position on Isreal/Palestine. even though I've never been and don't necessarily intend to go. I am against and will always be against the entanglement of jingoistic nationalist philosophy with Judaism. I believe in the separation of church and state. that should apply to anyone calling themselves democracy.I block people who hold that anti-Zionism is always antisemitism for my own safety. #Introduction

as an adult I found and read the writings from the #JewishLabourBund, and the Bundist philosophy of #Doikayt. the idea that instead of this absolute need for medinas Yisroel, that, "there, where we live, that is our country".there's also a line in the play #AngelsInAmerica by Tony Kushner, "there is no Zion save where you are". that play was… formative and important to me, growing up in the 1990s in the shadow of the death and destruction wrought by the AIDS epidemic. #Introduction

aside from what I've covered upthread, my other interests include #FibreArts (specifically spinning), #StarTrek (#DeepSpaceNine is best Star Trek), #Photography (although I haven't done much of that recently).I like to say I'm the world's best bad #Musician. I play pennywhistle and bodhrán (pretty well) and guitar (badly), and can learn most instruments passably to play supporting parts pretty quickly even if I'll never actually be good at them. #Introduction

@kabrams in the modern context Ashkenazi refers to German Jews, not Eastern Europeans Jews. Two very different groups from a cultural point of view, including language spoken, education, assimilation etc. If your parents spoke Yiddish at home (or are Russians) you’re an Eastern European Jew, not ashkenazi.
