@osi @sjvn @BrideOfLinux Technically it is since it runs on the Linux kernel. It's just not with the standard libraries that come with most Linux distros is all.

@osi @sjvn @BrideOfLinux It's been a while, but I'm pretty sure I was able to get a shell open on my Pixel Chromebook without doing any sideloading shenanigans. I think it was a keyboard shortcut at boot.

@osi @sjvn @BrideOfLinux Although #chromeos is based on #gentoolinux , the system is a "locked-down" google #spyware . It does not follow the #opensource spirit and is made for the sole purpose of promoting #google services on the expense of its users by selling their data to #advertisers đš. I really feel sorry for the #education sector which purchases these lame #chromebooks in #bulk for #students use. #governments must spend #public #fund on #opensource #technologies , which respect #privacy .

That sandbox's file system is stored separately from ChromeOS, and it doesn't interact with ChromeOS apps.So ChromeOS doesn't consider itself to be Linux, just Linux-compatible.

@PunishedD @BrideOfLinux @sjvn @osi from what I understand, ChromeOS runs only one application: a browser engine. But if you want it'll run gimp krita LibreOffice and any flatpack you throw at it. What's sandboxed at that point, the browser shipped or everything else?

@ed @BrideOfLinux @sjvn @osi Maybe they changed it since I checked last, but the only things you could run natively on it were ChromeOS apps, then later Android apps. Iâm not sure if itâs emulating Android but it always takes a huge performance hit while running one. Linux proper had to be installed from a control panel and started separately from within ChromeOS. From there you can install and run anything, itâs all segmented away from the main ChromeOS file system as âLinux filesâ. ChromeOS has a restricted bsh you can run from the browser natively, but it doesnât do much and doesnât have permissions to install.I havenât seen flatpak installation options, is that new in the last few years?

@ed That seems to be the sandbox I was talking about.If your device is up-to-date and compatible, you should be able to find âLinux (Beta)â when you go to your settings menu of your Chromebook.If itâs not a sandbox, or container, or emulator, then Iâll stand corrected. Everything will be under the segregated âLinux Filesâ folder in the Files app. And youâll still incur the performance load of running COS alongside whatever youâre doing in Linux.Itâs still very cool, I use it myself on my Chromebook. But the poll was asking whether COS is Linux; and if COS has to run a container, this seems to indicate it isnât!

@PunishedD I'm not sure what hack allows flat packs to run in cos. It's not as straight forward as it seems, considering that new Linux distros are running apps in sandbox too, the Immutable Linux new trend.

@ed @ed That's why I'm hedging everything with "seems" and "maybe". I'm not sure either.My theory is COS partitions off a piece of its main drive for the Linux install, which it then runs as a sort of permanent container. Flatpaks do install but they can only interact with that partition. Linux itself gets a pass-through to the Internet managed by COS (my VPN on COS seems to work without me installing it on Linux).

@osi @sjvn @BrideOfLinux I used to run my 3d printer from it using all my usual Ubuntu apps. It took a bit of fiddling but definitely was capable of running most Linux apps without changing them

@osi Just because it is based on a Linux kernel doesn't make a it a "Linux desktop". It's a locked-down proprietary spyware which only serves as a client for googlenet.A desktop Linux distro just work as expected by itself, needing only the machine it has been installed on. It doesn't require another, distant, someone's else computer ("the cloud" in marketing BS newspeak).@sjvn @BrideOfLinux
