It's supposed to be eventually. It's kinda dumb that they don't just use ActivityPub.

@sun_eater @eris @Epsi true decentralization isn't even possible rn due to spam mitigation problems, it's never going to be better than activitypub/nostr, all these meme protocols are just companies trying to corner the market through mindshare not technological relevance

@Hoss@shitpost.cloud they have a doc explaining why they wanted a new protocol instead of AP, but their reasoning is that transferring identities between servers is an issue. Though I'd argue in some ways that's a boon to fedi and helps keeps the clout chasing a bit down but ig some don't like that.

Influencers aren't a thing that naturally happens in an non advertising algorithm-driven content environment.

@sun_eater@goreslut.xyz @eris@akko.disqordia.space you will not believe how many people are like "fediverse is too complicated, bluesky is WAY better as a twitter alternative!!!" like wow did you do NO research into what bluesky wants to aim for?

they also are a result of two phenomenon, one new and one old1) unfettered access to the personal life of a celebrity results in a parasocial relationship. how much do you know about george clooney really? now how much do you know about pewdiepie.2) the never before seen mixture of social / financial aspects of our society. chat lines existed before but never on the scale of "send 5 dollars to someone you admire so that they reply."it's really creepy (as someone from the outside looking in)

@rees @eris @sun_eater @Epsi Bluesky and Threads exist for these reasons:1. tell regulators that they cannot be responsible for moderation or top-down regulator control of content because of the nature of decentralized networking.2. retain vestigial/Potemkin village federation so they can tell EU regulators that they have made a best-effort attempt at complying with messaging interoperability rules. These are all lies for multiple reasons for example Bluesky has at least two chokepoints that would enable them to control the entire network (biggest is placeholder server, look it up) and actual decentralization would destroy their ability to track users and serve ads, which obviously can never happen so absolutely none of this shit is real/good-faith.

@Hoss@shitpost.cloud Well my guess is they want to capture people from twitter and from what I see they really really care about follower counts even if their account is small. But then again that assumes they actually read protocol stuff and 90% of bluesky people don't even know that bluesky is aiming be a federated protocol lmao

@Moon@shitposter.club @rees@breastmilk.club @eris@akko.disqordia.space @sun_eater@goreslut.xyz Yeah their whole "small world" and "big world" protocol structure does seem a bit sus to me lol

@sun_eater@goreslut.xyz @eris@akko.disqordia.space Yeah, it's very simple I got a good grasp of it as soon as I joined. Problem is people don't want to put in even a low effort of research. They just want things that work simply. :chen_shrug:
