This is a great article explaining how SAG day rate and residuals work. For a show like 'Friends' that airs on network, day rate was $500/day and residuals for a person that appeared on one episode in a speaking part could be as much as 50k a year. Orange is the new black paid $900 a day (SAG minimum for streaming), and a person that did 7 days of work for a three episode ark. That person recieved a quarterly streaming royalty check of $27.30. #SagAftraStronghttps://www.newyorker.com/culture/notes-on-hollywood/orange-is-the-new-black-signalled-the-rot-inside-the-streaming-economy

       > a person that appeared on one episode in a speaking part could be as much as 50k a year. I know FRIENDS was like one of the biggest shows of all time but you're telling me that a rando character in one episode that happens to get a couple lines is gonna walk away with $50K/yr for almost forever?that seems pretty crazy to me

@feld @Cameo It's only "crazy" because you've been told your entire life that a system in which you sell your rights to yourself, your work, your everything for a flat fee week after week after week is the only way to do things.Friends has been constantly aired for decades. Why wouldn't the people involved still get paid? Do you think Stephen King shouldn't get paid for every copy of The Shining sold? Without residuals, there are no working creatives. End of story.

I'm just asking: are two sentences on camera really worth $500M over 10 years?Like, really?

       > What's crazy is the insane amount the studio made from it/continues to make from it that they CAN pay people that much and still be insanely profitable. Yeah maybe they shouldn't be making as much money either. Perhaps the value of the content is blown *way* out of proportion

*the studio* should not be making that much money off the content

@feld Friends didn't have reruns for 10 years. And the show made 1.5 billion dollars. The six stars made 816 million collectively. The one friends guest star made a total of 210k total for her participation - which isn't bad for someone that only gets 1-2 guest star gigs a year (not for lack of trying).

There was a 10 year period where Friends reruns/syndication was not happening anywhere?

@feld They might rerun the entire show, but not every season in one year. They might just run highlights or favorites. If your episode doesn't air that year, you don't get paid.

@feld And all those actors on the shows like Westworld or Willow that got pulled? They now make zero. So if they got paid SAG minimum plus residuals, they will now make zero for the rest of the show. The show has pulled the content until their residual contract runs out, and then they'll sell it for nothing.

Yeah, I recognize that the situation with streaming really really bad right now. This is a giant loophole being abused.

@feld @deco @Cameo Then stop watching movies. That's how you keep studios from making money. No more movies, no more TV, no more music, nothing creative at all can be consumed by you because you don't want studios making money.Think before typing next time.

I have like 48TB of pirated movies and TV shows. I can happily consume without the studios making any money.(I also pay for Netflix, Disney+, Max, and AppleTV, but I pirate everything I really like)
