I'm seriously considering defederating from #fosstodon at this point. I'm applying a limit for now, which means if you're on that instance, I may not see you.Mike Stone (effectively) doubles down on moderation principles based on keyword, not context. Additionally, he confirms limiting accounts without notification is part of the policy, effectively shadowbanning accounts.https://social.finkhaeuser.de/@jens/110690324938661563(The screenshots just capture the main part of the linked thread.)

@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de I'd agree that Fosstodon isn't the best place around, moderation and content wise, but defederating is rarely the solution in my viewpoint.

Note that moderation based on keywords is problematic in two ways:a) It is effectively tone policing, which aside from being a logical fallacy has also been used extensively to silence minority views.b) It's permeable to dog whistles. Dog whistles are speech with duplicate meaning, which means by definition it's more often about context, not words. That makes #fosstodon an unsafe space for marginalized groups. Engage at your own risk.

@jens i find it strange that you would consider defederating from a 20k user instance to be a measured response, to the fact that 2 users did not receive comms that they were limited (not blocked). Part of the issue seems to be to be a technical one of how notifications are delivered

@simon @jens Well, I don't know why you are so sensitive on this, but I guess it makes sense as it is the instance that you're on. The thing is that they have extremely strict and inconsistent moderation, which is what jens has a problem with, If I had read it correctly, and that's what he's talking about. Also I think he's on a single user instance, which makes the block less harsh than if he was running a larger instance. I don't see anything wrong with it, that's what happens with moderation.

@sotolf Mostly single user, yes. It's a "family instance", but most of my family don't care ;)@simon I can't see what you wrote (limit), but what really bothers me is that their moderation policies do not lead to a safe space; they are just performative compliance to a social contract.I don't want to deal with that, frankly.

@jens There's no need to grandstand about how you're going to do a thing. Do the thing, write a small explanation / link to posts as appropriate, write a bigger post only if actually needed.

@jens Decided to look at the Fosstodon instance rules, found this gem. If this isn't an example of someone up their own ass, I don't know what is.
