The #Fediverse and #Mastodon are part of the open web, and published posts are public intentionally. For whatever flaws #Meta has, blocking it from joining the Fediverse is counterproductive, bad PR, and not really possible. If you don't want companies to consume your content without your permission, then go for a walled garden, as the Fediverse isn't it.Similarly, #Google scrapping the Internet for their AI, with webmasters rushing to edit their robots.txt. As if that file means anything.

@alexelcu but you put out in public for ''fair use'',Imagine telling your friends that you play guitar, and they passing on info to guitar companies , who will come to you door knocking thrice every day to sell latest guitar !

@alexelcu if Mastodon is just going to be a vector for Meta, I'm just leaving. I don't care what your philosophical or ethical argument is. Maybe I just don't want to share a space with Meta.

@vrdhn Yes, I can imagine that, except that such problems don't admit technical solutions; unless you lock everything down. Also, I am an EU citizen, the #GDPR does protect against this precise scenario you're speaking of; which is why, guess what, Threads is for the moment not available in the EU because it does have teeth, and DPAs are increasingly giving bigger fines.

@Roundcat As a user, it's perfectly fine to block entire instances; nobody should have a problem with that. The argument is that you can't be part of the open web, and choose not to share a space with Meta or Google. And if you pick another walled garden, then you're just switching your data overlords. The problems brought by Meta can't be fixed with technical solutions, but rather with political ones, such as the GDPR, which does work despite what the Silicon Valley's elite would tell you.

@alexelcu The internet is increasingly becoming a walled gardens. The API changes to reddit, and the sign in requirements to twitter are examples of this. There is very little of this "Open Internet" you speak of, and it is slowly being claimed and walled off just like the commons in the real world. You don't share spaces with corporations like Meta or Google, they consume the space and force you to summit to their conditions. That's like saying the "free market" in regards to monopolies.

@Roundcat We are on the open internet right now.Reddit is still open, despite its API changes; as it can be viewed and indexed without login. They expose RSS feeds, too. The moment they stop doing that, they'll go down in flames, much like Digg before it, as part of their moat is their discoverability by search engines. The only monopolies that I worry about are those mandated by law. Everything else becomes irrelevant in time.

@alexelcu walled garden is the place if you want complete control¹ and privacy², nothing stays private on the net unless you make it so.¹ as long as you run your own server and software² can only be achieved if you create hard borders/firewall
