THREAD... It's time for my now-annual Big Adventure From A Modest Station™ trip... starting with a local GWR train for an 8 minute trip from Yate to Bristol Parkway. My last diesel train for a while. #rail #railways #RailTravel

Trains 2 and 3 are GWR class 80xs from Bristol Parkway to London Paddington, with a brief call into work at Swindon to pick up my umbrella 😉

Train no 4 is a #Crossrail class 345 from London Paddington to Farringdon. Amazing to think this railway only opened a little over a year ago - it is now indispensable to most of my cross-London journeys

After the special little slice of hell that is St Pancras customs, I'm on to train no 6 - the 1731 to Paris. And for a nice surprise, it is one of the original e300 Eurostars.

Day 2 of the Big Adventure, and after a great night's sleep at the 25Hours hotel (thanks for the tip @seatsixtyone) train no 7 is a short RER hop from Gare du Nord to Gare de Lyon.

With train no 8 I'm heading south east to Nice from Gare de Lyon on a duplex TGV. Please can someone switch on the air con before we leave?

Nice double insulated DC platform cantilever at Avignon. Keeps all live parts of the platform edge for safety.

Great food service on this TGV - order using the train WiFi and then go get your food when it's ready. Great views of the Cote d'Azure from the bar car, and the food is a cut above the usual buffet fare as well! @diningcar

Train no 9 from Nice across the Italian border to Ventimiglia. According to bahn.de this train terminates short of the border - very relieved to see that isn't the case, as my alternative was a detour inland that would add two hours to the journey

Train no 10 is my first Trenitalia from Ventimiglia to Genoa - or maybe Milan, I haven't decided yet - and is comprised of some lovely comfortable single deck carriages with electric loco haulage. Great to see an old school diamond pantograph as well

I've decided to push on to Milan, but a word about the Ventimiglia - Genoa route: it cannot in any way be described as "scenic" as the Thomas Cook rail map suggests. At least 2/3 of it is in tunnel!

After a lovely dinner at Noblesse Oblige a few minutes from Milano Centrale - another @seatsixtyone recommendation - I'm back at the station. I guess this is what happens when you put Mussolini in charge of railway architecture, huh. What's this style called? Greco-Roman-Fascist?

Day 3 of the Big Adventure starts unexpectedly, as I sleep straight through my alarm. Apparently putting earplugs in has a downside! Who knew that I could get up, get showered, pack, walk to the station, get breakfast, book a reservation on my next train, and get on that train in under an hour? Not me, that's for sure!Train no 12 is an OBB operated loco hauled IC set from Verona to Innsbruck through the Brenner Pass, and I am very glad to be on it!

The main carriage lights are off in this carriage, which gives the whole place an interesting vibe in tunnels

A cool thing about these OBB loco hauled trains is that you can see the train through the end carriage window. A not so cool thing is that you can also see the remains of any birds that have met their end on the loco

The thing I love about this place more than anything else is that in order to work here, you need to learn the rudiments of traffic management and infrastructure fault clearance as well as all the other stuff. I'll be tipping heavily
