Just sat down to try out PopOS in a VM and build my PopOS home folder, for migrating my work laptop from Windows. With user-friendly (and optional) auto-tiling, and targeting "professional computer users" I thought this was going to be my one-stop solution for a desktop…What the hell do these mystery meat navigation icons mean, in the file manager?! There are no tooltips. There is no Preference to enable tooltips.**sigh**!

@progo from left to right: new window (looks like a window with a plus signin teh lower right), new tab (looks like a tab in chrome with a plus sign in the middle), new folder (folder icon with the plus in the middle)You can thank the GNOME Desktop for the design. Pop_OS is in the process of breaking off from GNOME but, it's still early days

@DuffMcWhalen thanks. "Thanks GNOME Desktop" -- yep, I figured. "Breaking off…" That was my impression. So I don't blame PopOS specifically. I imagine there will be a lot of little stupid things like this that I'll have to learn by activating or web searching. It's just really jarring to come to a new system and have MMN with no tooltips in a REALLY critical place, discovered in my first half hour.I will stick with it for now and continue to configure my laptop's next build's $HOME.

@DuffMcWhalen TIL in PopOS (and GNOME Desktop) the New Document / New File command doesn't exist in Files until you put anything in ~/Templates; and this does not come pre-populated with a zero-length file.

@progo I do find Pop feels a little more polished than other distros I've used. I think it's because system76 is a hardware vendor and does more to make sure the latest hardware is compatible.

@DuffMcWhalen @progo ah of course GNOME is to blame. Modern GNOME is cancer to my workflow. I can do the traditional windows desktop paradigm or full on tiling but that Fisher price GNOME shit drives me bananas.

@Kalvo @DuffMcWhalen my progress, or lack there-of:- Set dark theme in PopOS (GNOME Desktop fork).- KDE Plasma (not present here) sets GTK app theme from its Settings app.- PopOS does not set Qt app theme.- Installed KVantum theme manager for installing your system GTK theme for Qt apps.- Kate renders now as an unholy combination of dark and light theme.Lesson learned: If you want a dark theme in Qt and GTK apps (without doing 6 hours of research), you might want to use KDE Plasma?

@Kalvo @DuffMcWhalen why did I install Kate? … PopOS Text Editor doesn't syntax highlight `.md` files.

@DuffMcWhalen @Kalvo If there's a project and workspace involved, Visual Studio Code.Otherwise (example: editing a desktop config file): Kate or Nano.

@DuffMcWhalen @Kalvo Why VS Code, for me?- Lots of FOSS extensions. Core is 95% FOSS.- Discoverable. Ctrl-Alt-P and search for the command you want.- Nice layered config file system.- Uses mostly CUA keyboard language, which I grew up with.

@progo @Kalvo VS Code is actually quite easy to install via the pop shop, the pop os internal app store. You even get to choose between deb and flatpack

@progo @DuffMcWhalen I use VS Code or vim. There is really no middle ground for me lol. As much as I would like to hate on Microsoft Code is a good product. I just install the OSS version.

@DuffMcWhalen @Kalvo I assumed so. We'll get to that.Right now I'm still fighting the theme problem (almost got it fixed I think) and STARTING a `~/Documents/Install Log.md` -- everything I install and configure, and where from. When the desktop is built, I'll backup $HOME (this is a VM), erase my laptop, install PopOS, and repeat all the steps in `Install Log.md` that aren't saved in $HOME.Trying to minimize job downtime.

@progo @DuffMcWhalen Yeah I have been rolling around solutions for the issue of reinstalling all the programs I use after a nuke and pave. Right now I have the settings files down. Have had that for years. I have a folder that is synced to my NAS and other machines called "Cloud". In that folder are my projects and whatnot but also config files and folders with a shell script I wrote to symlink everything in the proper location so at least after syncing the folder all my settings are right.

@DuffMcWhalen @Kalvo FYI…- KVantun: choose KvGnomeDark theme.- Kate: Settings → Color Scheme → KvGnomeDark.- `.profile`: `export QT_STYLE_OVERRIDE=kvantum` (log out and log back in)… moving on to actually install and configure shit now.
