Photographers, I've been thinking a lot lately about watermarks. If you follow me, you may have noticed I don't use them. It has been brought to my attention that many people actually prefer seeing them though and are more likely to boost posts with them. Can I get your thoughts?#Photography #Copyright

@twizzt watermarks are good, just a pain to do, so I end up skipping them. 😅

@twizzt I'm on the fence about it... I respect whatever from others, and I when I have the time I'll do add watermarks to my own stuff. But not 100% of the time. Could be that I just don't have a proper workflow for adding it yet, and I strictly use Canon's DPP for my editing with the "real" cameras. In metadata and already from the camera I do have copyright info and my name and all that yada-yada, it's just when I have to add it in a visual way to the end product I get lazy.

@twizzt Second this. I have that "every now and then" kind of feeling that my photos were about to get stolen, and being misused. Either for a joke, or to defame.

@twizzt Coming from Twitter where characters are at such a premium, watermarking felt helpful for easily sharing photos with credit. I also have Lightroom configured now to drop a semi-opaque watermark in any of four corners when exporting for sharing. When tastefully done, I don’t find them distracting!

@twizzt Better to add alt text instead.

@Anya_Adora It is exactly the people who don't want to give credit to the photographer that makes me feel like I need to include them now. It's hard to draw comparisons between users of this platform and the fowl site. If my images have my watermark, people here know it's actually mine and are therefore willing to boost it. Decisions aren't made by how many likes will be received.

@iana They are a pain if your workflow doesn't include subscription based software. My biggest issue is I'm not at all happy with any of the designs I've come up with so far.

@captainflanger What set me off on this was finding one of my photos of a tiger beetle being used on a radio station's website in a shit article about insects that people need to smash. My tiger beetle was labeled as an emerald ash borer. I regret not suing them. Don't steal a photo and use it to encourage killing a beneficial native insect. It was just too much for me. The dumb thing is, I have some really cool old photos of EAB that I would not really have minded them using w/ accreditation.

@adrianmorales Not at all what alt text is for. It won't prevent theft or misuse. That said, I do try to add alt text to all my photos. I have a surprising number of visually impaired followers.

@Anya_Adora It's not at all about boosts or visibility. It's about theft and more importantly, misuse. I'll look into pixelfed, but I have enough exposure as is. If people want to find my images, they can. If people look into Exif data, they will see my name. Those aren't the people I'm concerned about.

@Anya_Adora I know watermarks are easy to remove, but it's enough of an obstacle to stop the mist egregious offenders. Please read my response to @captainflanger I've found my photos being used in ways that harm things I care about. Will this stop all of the problems? No. Will it stop many? Hopefully...

@Anya_Adora I appreciate it. I didn't know EXIF was removed. I guess the way I see it is like putting a padlock on my shed. If someone wants to steal my lawnmower, it won't stop them. It will annoy most would be thieves for them to pick an easier target.
