Money doesn't trickle down. It rises, like hot air. The more money you have, the more you can make by investing it. The less you have, the quicker the crappy stuff you can buy breaks down. And generally, the less healthy of a lifestyle you can lead, resulting in more health care costs etc. It's crazy that we let that metaphor take hold.

@wjmaggos A German proverb: 'Der Teufel scheisst immer auf den groessten Haufen' (The devil always shits on the biggest pile).

@wjmaggos We didn’t though. “Trickle down” was a straw man created by the Left to mock serious arguments by economists rather than anything anybody seriously proposed. Unfortunately, when it comes to campaigns and slogans, the Right and Left both engage in mindless rhetoric and sophistry because that’s what convinces naïve people to vote. Reality is nuanced and not easily explained or understood. And that doesn’t play well with voters who want simple black and white choices.

@wjmaggos Which is yet another reason that democracy (at scale) is a silly idea. People are very informed when it comes to the things they’re intimately familiar with. But most people are intimately familiar with a vanishingly small segment of human knowledge. And outside that segment, they’ll follow the blather of any demagogue that charms them.

@wjmaggos Imagine some nature documentary said “beavers chew trees and knock them down to build dams” and a dumb politician started saying “we should chew on tree bark for prosperity, just like the beavers!” But then the equally dumb opposition says “this guy’s an idiot! beavers don’t chew trees!” And whether beavers chew trees becomes a (silly and irrelevant) political football. It feels like this is 90% of political “discourse.”

@wjmaggos And to prove my previous point, I don’t even know whether beavers really chew on trees to knock them down. I got it from popular media portrayals like we all get our information about the world. Is that even true? I have no idea! Most of us don’t really “know” anything about the complexities of the world. But we’re quick to act like we do, and ready to fight anybody who challenges us. It’s really comical.

@wjmaggos Had an older relative describe trickle down to me, when Reagan was first elected, as, "Don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining!"#capitalism
