This springtail (Entomobrya sp?) was under the same mushroom as the Chalcidoid wasp I posted yesterday. It was between the gills of this mushed up shroom. Taken at around 3.5X.Question: How many times have you encountered such a creature? The answer will likely surprise you.

@twizzt if it was between the gills of an edible, I must’ve eaten some.🤷♀️

@edgeoforever I am a firm believer that nobody is truly a vegetarian. It is definitely plausible you have eaten some.

@fuzzychef They like any place that never dries out. Where I find the most is where leaf mould covers rock. The more I look, the more I find. So a well watered garden is a great spot for them especially if you mulch. Sometimes around the edge of ponds you will see rafts of dozens to hundreds of them. They can be found on snow or in basements. I've even found them up in trees. They prefer organic material, but will be happy enough around the condensation of a toilet.

@twizzt Surprisingly fluffy! I haven’t thought of them as fluffy. I know they’re used in the terrarium trade for clean up and feeding smaller frogs and the like, you can buy cultures of them.

@mosspiglet some are totally smooth. Most of the globular springtails I see are even shiny. I use to do vermicomposting with red wigglers and my indoor bin had 4 species that found their own way into it. Very resourceful.

@nellie_m @mosspiglet I would start by asking your local master naturalist group. I think I got my worms for free of of Craigslist by asking. Moisture control is the biggest issue. If your home tend to be super dry, use a plastic bin. If you live in a humid environment, something with cloth might be better. I got rid of mine about 6 years ago so I can't recall specific articles or websites I used. If I get a bigger house, I will almost certainly do it again.

@nellie_m @mosspiglet since I don't have the space currently, I just blend all my produce scraps and bury them just under the surface of my garden soil.
