@sixtra this was really, really good. Most points are things I’ve tried to correct in other people at one point or another. It’s nice to hear support for my own logical intuitions on these matters. The mistakes I’ve made are in regards to the nuance with respect to trusting our intuition (I had the opinion that intuition should never be trusted) and the limits of charitability when steelmanning another’s argument.

@minogully I have also been skeptical about intuition, but at the same time one must not forget that part of our intuition is a little based on previous experiences as well. Although it’s not exactly what’s highlighted in the video, but that’s what’s so good overall. One like, aha! Yes, of course, why not, it sounds completely logical. I really think Emerson nailed it in this series/video.

@minogully I recognize that too, but sometimes I wonder if some of these misunderstandings are about precisely the fact that they cannot separate evidence from proofs(conclusive). I try to separate them both when I’m having conversations online. And I actually had a conversation today with a countryman on just this topic. Since I said that I grant theists arguments for “God”.

@sixtra I think you’re spot on.A lot of this comes down to a person’s definition of a word being loaded with meaning that another’s doesn’t come with.Like “belief”, which, as you know, is touched on in the video. But no one wants to hear that their definition needs adjustment.

@minogully Exactly, and I don’t know how many times we’ve argued about “belief” etc on Twitter. I totally get people’s way of using “lack of- /absence of beliefs”.. It’s never about them being wrong but in the end it comes down to what you have written: ”no one wants to hear that their definition needs adjustment.”
