What a delightfully weird bicycle chain 😍 cc: @ruari https://onlinebicyclemuseum.co.uk/1897-simpson-chain/

@JohanEmpa @ruari I don’t get it, what was supposed to be superior about it? The article doesn’t actually say!

@john it was just an old design. I guess it was not technically better as it did not stick around but it looks cool. Also look at the chain on this toot 😉https://mstdn.social/@CoolBikeArt1/110687787676793371@JohanEmpa

@ruari @JohanEmpa sure, but it’s more complicated than previous chains, and they claimed it was superior. There must be some sort of theory of its mechanical benefit?

@ruari @JohanEmpa Okay, I shoulda just read the Wikipedia page!“Simpson made claims, widely discredited, that the levers of this chain provided a mechanical advantage that could amplify energy produced by the cyclist.”So basically levers making free energy hooey. A scam basically. Mechanical scams like this were common then.

@john surely the 'advantage' from the inventor's perspective was more money for him. 🤷 The lack of advantage for anyone else was probably why it no longer exists. But whatever it is a fun looking historical design @JohanEmpa

@ruari @JohanEmpa it is interesting and cool-looking, not denying! But the article says: “However, within a few years, the freewheel hub came onto the market and that, along with the lightweight half inch chain, made the Simpson Lever Chain obsolete.”… which suggests it was trying to solve problems that the freewheel hub solved better. Doesn’t actually look like it though. It was never *not* obsolete, because it was bullplop from the start!
