Have folks in #EdTech like @davemosk heard of this? https://botpopuli.net/flying-the-kite-high-against-digital-colonialism-foss-in-the-era-of-edtech/ #equity #libre #OpenEducation #NotFauxpen #Decolonisation

@davemosk Aotearoa NZ needs to do this too. We don't want our kids locked into Microsoft or Google (or Adobe or Apple or even SeeSaw) for their whole lives. That's not how we become a digitally enabled nation.

@lightweight If only it were easier to engage with the Ministry of Education! Or government in general. This is not even on their radar.

@davemosk yeah. We need a regime change in tech education in NZ. The current crew have demonstrated that they're not fit for purpose.

@davemosk @lightweight How do you figure that? These lock-in tech decisions and deals are made at the top levels of the ministry of education. Aint nothing to do with educators. We don't get single thing to comment on. I guarantee that there's no consideration made about these choices on the basis of 'tech education'- it'll all be about file and document storage and sharing, at a lowest common denominator (and dollar) level.

@downbeatdan @davemosk I describe a way we could combat it here (and highlight a way in which the Ministry has shifted liability onto school boards to deal with (bad) Ministry policy): https://davelane.nz/explainer-digitech-risks-school-boards Maybe we need to create a crisis for the Ministry.

@lightweight @downbeatdan The Ministry of Education, and our kaiako and ākonga do not need further crises. They need thoughtful and strategic leadership from the very top.

@davemosk I'm saying that the only way they'll change their current broken approach is if they're forced to. They've been impervious to constructive suggestions thus far. @downbeatdan

@lightweight @davemosk @downbeatdan interesting discussion (and blog post). This feels to me that something teachers (or even schools) aren't able to address - intend to the view that this would require system level guidance/solutions.

@dsc> This feels to me that something teachers (or even schools) aren't able to address - intend to the view that this would require system level guidance/solutionsYes, I agree with @downbeatdan's comments to that effect. How about organising with teaching unions to build a movement around giving teachers more say in EdTech choices? Akin to the way unions and poverty-eradication groups collaborated on the Living Wage campaign, a hugely successful piece of organising.@lightweight @davemosk

@lightweight @davemosk My current approach around discussions like this is to use the values statement published by the Ministry, specifically:Our visionEvery New Zealander: is strong in their national and cultural identity aspires for themselves and their children to achieve more has the choice and opportunity to be the best they can be is an active participant and citizen in creating a strong civil society is productive, valued and competitive in the world.

@carl_klitscher we need to hold the decision makers accountable. But they clearly don't want to be accountable (I have asked at every single tech conference I've ever attended in NZ if there's anyone from the Min of Ed in attendance - aside from Ed Strafford, who always took time off work to attend at his own cost - it's always been crickets), so we need to flush them out, because they're demonstrably unfit-for-purpose. @davemosk

@lightweight> I've ever attended in NZ if there's anyone from the Min of Ed in attendance - aside from Ed Strafford... it's always been cricketsI remember at last one guy from Ministry of Education who used to regularly attend CC ANZ meetings in the early days (late noughties). There seemed to be a lot of support there for CC and OER. Possibly because Dr Brian Opie (RIP) and the Council for the Humanities already had credibility there? What changed? @carl_klitscher @davemosk

@lightweight @davemosk I then mention that we have approx 4000 IT students per year coming out of tertiary into the work force and for the Ministry to then turn round to these people and say "Forget all that shit... we only use Microsoft products" is a bit disingenuous of us.Then comes the 'but if we all use the same system our costs will be lower'... Sounds great in theory and may even be true in the private sector but the MoE has a monopoly on the system and has different set of drivers.

@lightweight @davemosk So while there is still a need to be prudent with public money there is also a need to be creative and innovative in how those services are delivered... The business requirements still drive IT choices and for IT to then turn around to the business and say 'Sorry, can't be bothered supporting more than one collaboration tool therefore here is 'Teams' when there are serious limitations in how that works is a real problem.

@lightweight @davemosk For starters, the industry has spent the last 20+ years moving away from monolithic fat client apps towards web based services that provide real value and yet we still have one US multinational trying to drive us back to that outdated approach. We've got people saying that every process, procedure, function needs to be captured in a document or spreadsheet and filed away to meet Govt records standards...

@lightweight @davemosk Which is fine for archive purposes but is inappropriate for operational use... What would be more productive? Using a document and spreadsheet stored in Sharepoint to record information the education system needs to run or using Jira, Confluence, Salesforce to provide seamless workflow, information collection, processing and reporting in real time?Again, IT needs do not trump business requirements.
