@stux alternatively, why not use grub for the dualbooting?

@hhg @ivesen Im just gonna test all F keys now :blobcatgiggle: I think it uses grub!(come to think of it.. I have disabled fastboot in the BIOS but not Windows, not sure that matters)

@stux if you're using grub, there is a configuration to set how much time the boot menu will appear. maybe your config is set to 0 or something

@stux Are you sure your UEFI/BIOS boots into the correct boot loader?

@stux Unless I'm missing something DEL per some guy on YouTube is the key you press repeatedly after power up on that one, the other one some mobos use to get into bios might be sometimes Esc, F1

@stux Everywhere I looked it is saying F11. Some places are saying tab? But I've never known tab to work. Does holding either ctrl or alt working when booting? Should bring up the GRUB menu, it might allow you to boot that way.

@stux In this machine F11 display the boot menu. And it is independent from the function keys mode setted up in the bios settings (fn+Fkeys or Fkeys without fn).It is also independent from the boot loader type. I mean works strictly on the hardware level basis.

@ivesen Grub is an old heavy cow. Besides, why using something what already is build into the hardware? On uefi enabled machines an extra software boot-loader is totally not needed. Just take some lightweight boot manager, like rEFInd for example. And you're done.

@MartinBe so your solution to shitty uefi firmware is to rely on the uefi firmware? :thonking:

@stux get a cheap computer that can run Linux and access it from windows via RDP. This has been my working setup for about a decade already.

@ivesen I was not written shitty or not. I was written about the existent hardware options/functions.You can use systemd boot if you know how. Your choice alone. There are Plop, Lilo and few others too.

@MartinBe OP describes an issue in which he can't find a button to select which OS to boot through the UEFI, and I suggest he uses grub if he can't find it after asking hererefind and systemd boot don't really help here, not sure about the others since I've only barely touched lilo

@stux I think there's a command to reboot to the BIOS from Linux. From Windows, if you hold down 'Shift' when you click the reboot option, you can click on 'more options' and 'enter the UEFI menu' or something.Someone else suggested increasing the grub boot delay time, which is a good solution too. Hope that helps! :blobfox:

@stux I've got a number of ASRock motherboards, none of them have that one-key boot menu option either. Just the key to get into the full BIOS setup. I use Grub, or I believe Refind will do similar, to give me the selection menu. Just make sure it's configured to display the menu for a few seconds, mine started out set to 0 for insta-boot into the default OS. Windows has a bootloader that'll do the same thing but it's tricky to get configured and visible, Grub is probably easier.

@stux I use refind and you can choose the os every time you boot. Some motherboards have bios access on enter, space, etc. I had to google the specific model of my motherboard to find the key once 😠I feel your pain.

@stux I have to press F12 repeatedly during the POST until the computer beeps that the keyboard buffer is full. I think the keyboard buffer gets cleared at some point, so pressing it once doesn’t always work.

@stux I've personally used Refind for a while. It does its job well, even if it isn't particularly advanced.

@stux try all F keys, 0, Esc, Delete / Backspace.F11 should be the key for MSI, they recommend hitting it continuosly while the machine is booting (instead of holding the key).
