#Iceland is a rugged and beautiful country. Its volcanic origin gives rise to #lava fields, geysers, #waterfalls , lava tubes, #hotpools and beautiful #scenery . Here is a detailed itinerary for the Golden Circle and a Reykjavik walking tour. https://backpackandsnorkel.com/Iceland/

@backpackandsnorkel Was there last year, and got to enjoy my first 5.0+ earthquake and several days of aftershocks. The locals seem very chill about it.

@JustinDerrick Earthquakes are indeed normal for Iceland, as it lies on top of the Atlantic ridge. There are about 500 earthquakes per week, but the vast majority of them are so weak that you won’t even feel them. I believe on average, there is one per week that is 4.0 or above in strength, so it seems you were there at the wrong time, as 5.0 is quite strong. I have never experienced a 5.0 - how scary is it?

@backpackandsnorkel It only lasted about two or three seconds... So it was scary for a minute or so when you wonder if that was a little one, or the big one. Almost immediately, maintenance staff came out from every direction and were checking on the building and systems to make sure nothing was damaged, so it felt reassuring that they knew what to do. The aftershocks took some getting used to, but it seems like the building codes are written with this sort of seismic activity in mind.

@JustinDerrick well, it is good to know that they have a routine for such cases. Years ago, we had booked a vacation in Japan, and then Fukushima happened and we had to cancel, as we would have arrived 10 days after the disaster. That told me that, even though countries are well prepared, there is always the chance of an earthquake that will be too strong.
