OK, Mastodon, question time! 🐘 Does anyone have a correct definition of the "Cloud"?Yes, before someone says it: I know it is someone else's computers, thank you very much. But what does the "Cloud" cover in terms of technologies?Let us set aside, for a moment, serverless / Lambda / Functions, which is (in my opinion) a special case (containers spun on demand with a single application).Let us set aside, as well, things like databases, Kubernetes, etc... And all managed services.1/x

So what we are left with is: virtual machines / compute, storage (object oriented or not), IAM, virtual networks and security. How do you define that? I have my own definition, but I'd like to hear from [much] smarter people than I am.Post your ideas in replies, please!2/x

@ParadeGrotesque Probably an oversimplification but here goes; cloud - a shareable resource, can be open or accessible by authentication or physical topology (e.g. local intranet - Nextcloud)$0.02peace

@pa2 Oversimplified, yes. But you have a point when you say the resource is shared and accessible through a network. Thanks!

@ParadeGrotesque A remote storage where you think your data is safe, but it is not. And which you might also be spending money for which could be better spent elsewhere.

@ParadeGrotesque @pa2 I would also include that the resources are abstracted from the physical hardware and are software defined service instead.

@tig @ParadeGrotesque @pa2 Yes I think the abstraction is the important bit; it's not someone elses computer; it's a collection of (someone elses) computers (and storage, networking etc i.e. resources) that you use without worrying about the detail of which ones exactly you're using and being able to change your usage. That makes it distinct from older systems of renting a VM on one host. It's also distinct from renting a physical cluster for some of the time.

@ParadeGrotesque Cloud is a definition the capitalist market on computers have appropriated to cover this only meaning: everything (in any logical way) that runs a software in the internet, on a megadatacenter owned by a big corporation. If you don't believe me, thing about your home or an office. Can you say "Cloud" to your home or office network without making yourself sound silly? Nope. That's why the adoption of this word in computers is merely and uniquely for corporations.

@niko Thank you, but I was asking for a technical and not a political definition.

@ParadeGrotesque I'll do this for you šŸ˜…The Cloud is every piece of software (hardware included, but omitted) that runs any type of service on the internet on a big datacenter. Here is your non-political definition šŸ˜‚ see? if wasn't that difficult.

@ParadeGrotesque I quite like this definition:Cloud services are infrastructure, platforms, or software that are hosted by third-party providers and made available to users through the internet.1/2

@ParadeGrotesque Cloud services facilitate the flow of user data from front-end clients (e.g., users’ servers, tablets, desktops, laptops—anything on the users’ ends), through the internet, to the provider’s systems, and back. Cloud services promote the building of cloud-native applications and the flexibility of working in the cloud. Users can access cloud services with nothing more than a computer, operating system, and internet connectivity.Source: https://www.redhat.com/en/topics/cloud-computing/what-are-cloud-services2/2

@ParadeGrotesque Here's one useless definition: enterprise IT as OpEx instead of CapEx, or 'how I learned to stop worrying and add my own fat margins on top of my vendors' exorbitant ones and pass them on down the food chain'.
