I think we are finally nearing the end of the cape cycle. I've noticed in entertainment it seems to be around a decade of something being dominate until it becomes too much and people tune out. Last one was zombies; zombie games, zombie tv shows, zombie movies, etc. Then super hero media became the mainstay. But in the last year or so the shows are doing badly, the movies drawing in less money, the games bombing or getting delayed. @PixelBillion @flawless There are a lot of incredibly good mangas and light novels out there that would make amazing adaptations into movies, shows, and games. But, as with all things, the benefit would wear off after a few years once major players take hold (hollywood, netflix, hulu) and completely butcher the shit out of everything they can get their filthy fucking hands on. It would be a nightmare scenario where after maybe 3 or 4 years those entities alone would probably make me hate anime.

@Jim @flawless I was also thinking about the attempts lately to turn very popular animes into live action shows. The Cowboy Bebop one failed, but Deathnote live action is getting a sequel. One Piece and Yu Yu Hakusho are also getting adapted. Hollywood getting ahold of anime would probably mean more live action reboots

They can't just present the story and characters as are, they feel the need to change things so "the audience can relate". Fuck relating. The properties gained popularity by being written the way they were. Good stories, interesting hooks, novel concepts don't need some hipsters intervention and reveisionism. But they can't help themselves. They always do it. Look at shit like the Dragon Ball movie and how absolutely awful that was.

If Hollywood got ahold of anime and they consistently made movies on par witn that awful DragonBall movie from back in the day, that would hilarious because of how bad that was. My fear is that they are technically more competent than that but are still filled with diversity (read black people and homosexuals, other lgbt elements) and are dramatically changed from theirnsource material. That Dragonball movie was bad and universally despised, but an aspect of that movie that always annoyed me was thr decision to make Goku a nerd who is picked on in school. They did that same thing to Light in the Deathnote live action movie. There are certain Hollywood writing tropes that are very prevalent that annoy me with their overuse. My fear is more that the films will be technically competent (and therefore not really funny to laugh at) but filled with annoying tropes that flatten any uniqueness the story had and diversity shit. The Steins;gate live action show never happened so who knows. Maybe they'll be content poking a few mega popular franchises and leaving the rest alone unmolested.

There are exceptions like Iron Man and Batman. But most heroes simply receive their powers or are born with them. Superhero comics are not really about hardwork, they're power fantasies. The martial arts genre is mostly a little different and characters have to work to earn their skills. I always empathized more with characters like Kuwabara, Vegeta and Tien who had to work to be able to scrape by than someone like Superman who never has to.

And that reality, in this way, is far more interesting than anything in a superhero comic. Or whatever abomination calls itself a film.

However, the Sonic and Mario movies were both pretty well received, and like comics, games are an untapped bottomless well of IPs. To say nothing of the cross-promotional benefits; mainstream audiences still don't really buy comics, games are more popular than movies these days.
